If Amiga, Inc. and Hyperion weren't in the middle of a lawsuit evaluating Hyperion's performance under the development contract, I doubt OS4 classic would ever have seen the light of day.

I want to like this news, but it’s really just stupid. So this gives old machines the ability to split more from one another?  It's not good enough to have ECS and AGA differences, or 68000 and 680x0 differences, but now its 68k versus PPC differences?     Maybe it helps get some old machines to work with the PPC-only motherboards that have been sporadically produced over the years  But screw ‘em.  Give me more dev work on classic Amiga OS 3.x and the 68k codebase.  Unless of course OS 4 comes with a PPC add on I can use in my Amiga 500, 600, 1000, CDTV, 2000, 3000, CD32, and 4000.

I am genuinely surprised and disappointed at some of the negative comments regarding this release.  I know I moaned a little about the price, but I do believe it is a major breakthrough for "classic" Amiga users.  We all knew it would never happen for 68k, so surely this is the next best thing?
Also, I'm certain there are many more PPCs out there than some people seem to think.
This is a time for celebration.  Break out the ale!  :pint:

Man, believe me, I hate to pee in the pudding and boy would I love to have a copy of AmigaOS 4.0, but let's face the facts.

Hyperion gambled and lost big time.  Not only did we lose because all the hardware vendors left the market due to the delay, but they lost because there is NO WAY for them to recoup their cost of development and turn any reasonable profit.

This is a textbook case of bad business strategy and planning.

So it's over.  Dead.  Caput.  No hardware, no AmigaOS 4.0.

Hate to be that harsh about it.  Hyperion simply pulled an Irving Gould or Medhi Ali on this one.

For the handful of people who do have the PPC card and will buy the software, great for them.  If they can find developers for their rare boards, even better.

In the meantime, I say enjoy you current kit.  Developers should keep developing for it and we'll see what Amiga 5.0 turns out to be.

Don't feel sad.  It's not like you were getting any real browser, extra media tools like iMovie, iPhoto, better IDE tools, etc.

Gold = 50.000 sold titles??

Is there 50.000 active amiga PPC users??

Everywhere else it's considered that selling to gold, og "going gold" means selling 50.000 units. Like from the music industry. Except in the US where it means to sell 500.000 units....

How many are sold?? :-o
A posting a day keeps the sanity away...

I think it's a question of realism. If you've been living under a rock for the past decade and still think Amigas are the be all and end all of one's computing experience, then this is exciting news. If you haven't, you know it's too little, and far, far too late.

Maybe, but most will be like mine: mothballed several years ago, when it outlived its usefulness and became too flaky and expensive to maintain to warrant further effort. Any money I'd spend on software for it now would be like throwing it off the top of a tower block and hoping some of it might float back to me on the wind, because the hardware is likely to keel over and die at any time even in the event that it still works now - and when it dies, it's a nightmare and an absolute fortune to replace, not to mention that you're likely to be facing extensive downtime in the process.

It just doesn't make much sense. If you want to buy it for ideological reasons, that's great, but from a practical standpoint it's a bit of a stillborn baby.

Hyperion made stupid commercial decisions all the way down the line and lost, end of story. The Amiga's last stand is over with the predictable result.
