Psst... I'll let you in on a little secret...

There are already OTHER ways to keep in contact with old friends!!!

One is called an 'instant messenger', the other an amazing invention called 'email' and the third is a devilishly clever piece of electronic trickery called a 'telephone'!

:-)

Wow.  A snide comment.  I guess Amiga.org really *is* coming back to life.. :)

Seriously though, since the average age of the current Amiga community member falls below the age during which Commodore even existed, I doubt most of you are even old enough to understand when I say that when you've been out of school 25 years and have NO way to contact them via "IM" or "e-mail", then something like Facebook does indeed come in handy for re-establishing contacts.

Some of the people I now talk to are in different parts of the country, even different parts of the world, and it would be neigh impossible to find them otherwise.

But thanks for the wise-ass comment, makes me feel like I should step in for your daddy who obviously should have smacked you harder as a child..

@mingle

I'd put out the phone option but as for the others I agree, I was gonna write something like that. If I want to contact old friends I get their contacts some way and .. contact them! If we want to share common stuff we can use email lists or whatever. But nothings like doing a gather like the old times:)

@Jose,

Yes, but if you haven't seen or heard from a friend in 25 years, and as is the case with old girlfriends, they now have different last names, how do you find them via the phone or other means?

I'm not saying you would ONLY use FB or another means to stay in touch, but I'm now talking with old girlfriends from different freaking states who would be impossible to find if they hadn't seen me on Facebook first.

Matter of fact, I'm *still* searching for THE "one that got away", and I guarantee you that I'll never find her via e-mail or a phone.

That's really the only reason I have a Facebook. Originally, it was just to talk to my little sister, but one person found me, randomly from an old email I still use I attached to Classmates.com years ago. So, I added her on Facebook, 'cos she asked if I had one and my friends went from 2 to 70 in a matter of weeks.

The problem with Facebook is a) it's maddening that people add you, when in reality, you really weren't friends back in the day and b) the people you *REALLY* want to talk to, aren't on there. :confused:

Sorry for the short response, but I totally agree. That's the only downside for me.

I've got one guy from elementary and middle school who's constantly talking to me now.  The only memory I have is of this guy is him constantly being a bully and trying to pick a fight.  Took many a paddling and near suspension from whipping his ass, let me tell you, but it was always him starting crap trying to prove that he was the tough guy.

Didn't help that I was 6' tall by age 12 though.  I was always the kid that all the prisoner daddies told their punk ass kids to "find and beat up on the first day of school so nobody messes with you".

Also, the target of the football team for pretty much the same reason.  I was always the calm "talk your way out of it" guy but them starting s**t with me didn't always work to their advantage once I'd had enough...

I'm definitely not on facebook, myspace or something.  I have enough solid friends to even consider making those virtual ones.  It depends (usage justification) on that balance that is, how many people you're meeting every week.  Well maybe for some that's the only social way out, not for me, I ain't no target here.  And I don't like twitter either.  I'm not a Brittish Queen or Britney Spears to entertain the audience with the info that I'm just scratching my butt.  Also I have no business intension on informing anybody about my activities.  Coming to the business (I consider myself an addict to this kind of attitude towards everything) - all web2 usage is in 99% economically pointless.  But it is clinically some sort of a cheap relief, hence those crowds ready for subscription. But that's a huge space for targetting ads - this is why it is cool to be a facebook owner :lol:

Well amigaorg or awnet sites are pretty social but they're about hobbies, which makes those sites more to vortals than web2.  Besides this whole Amiga stuff is ill enough to have fantastic people only that stick around.

In my country there's a huge web2 portal nasza-klasa.pl, something like classmates.com.  It already has 11 milion accounts and my wife is spending much time on it.  I happen to be seeing my pals in a pub while she sits before it and pretends to be intelligent by prooving the people out there that she's smart enough.  I have no such needs, I don't need a therapy, I don't need a bulk of brand new friends either.

The only social site I'm active on is linkedin.  I heard many stories it is easy to find a job through it - as long as you work in some niche.  But I don't count on it, just refresh my cv every several months, possibly adding some friend I would rely on.  Just one more - imdb.com.  This is social but one can use it as a reference movie database only - that's what I'm doing - browsing the already existing data.

Undoubtedly the most annoying thing about the Facebook craze is the use of the word "Facebook" as a verb. "Do you Facebook?" or "Oh yeah, just Facebook me about it." or "He Facebooks me all the time." The only good thing about this is that it presents the opportunity to inform people that you Facebooked their mum.

Quiet you, unless you want a righteous Facebooking!

My sig on another site reads:

"Facebook? You've read my signature, that's enough social interaction for one day."

I don't think I'm interesting enough to fill up more than a couple of fields on a social networking site.

Most of my family are already on Facebook... one more reason not to use it I suppose.

I joined Facebook to see what all the fuss was about...

It was interesting at first but imagine my horror when people started to find me and wanted to talk..:eek:

In the end it felt like a big game of Pokemon... "Gotta collect them all" :)

Sites like Facebook are hopelessly boring. I will never subscribe.
