I would just like to throw in my 2p worth. I am new here and as my nick suggests I'm a MacNut. I just manged to aquire a working Amiga 600 and am trying to revive it. It had no PSU (I temporarily bothced a cable together to use a PC AT supply but I'm going to buy an A1200 PSU 'cause the AT supply I have is bigger than the A600!) or mouse and I have zero software. Being a pervayor of old Macs I'm used to scraping about for info and stuff to get old machines working. I'm impressed by th ingenuity of this community - you lot put the Mac guys to shame, we can't even get anyone to develop a 68k USB interface :(

Anyhoo, on the subject of Apple, I'd just like to sat I have a PowerMac G3/400 in one of those sexy blue cases and it's a really good machine. I do, however, get pissed off by the fact that despite *looking* like they use PC hardware many Mac cards need Mac Firmware which automatically give comanies the license to print money out of our pockets. I was delighted to hear the AmigaONE is able to use a large proportion of PC hardware 'out of the box' with only drivers needing to be developed. It's a damn good idea and a champion way to beat PCs at their own game.

Oh and BTW Apple are still making a profit after all these years of everyone saying they were going down the pan.

Another thing is they are set to use the IBM Power4 to replace the PowerPC i the next 3 years. I don't think, good though it is, everyone should get too enthused about getting the new G4 Amiga to use AltiVec. It's great technology but Motorola own it and are about to pull the plug on their PPC lines as they want to concentrate on developing a 64-bit CPU to compete with intel, AMD and IBM. If they pull the plug they will do one of 2 things. Either they will sell AltiVec to Apple so they can emulate it on the Power4Macs or they will refuse to lisence it altogether. Either way I see Amiga users stuck in an awkward jam if they depend on AltiVec being there...

Don't worry about altivec support in future ppc cpus, IBM has stated that their cut-down Power4 version will include a vector unit compatible with AltiVec.

The situation will be similar to the programs that include two executables, one requires FPU and the other not... soon the same will happen, but one will require AltiVec and the other will work in 603/604/g3...

the amigaone is a real amiga it is just more modern.the same with the mac if you sell a machine based on old technolgy who would buy it things have to advance.the same with a car because ford or vauxhaull or some other company release a new version of a car does not make the new version a fake or not real. :-?
I once had an amigaone xe but sold it .

If they are dead or not I note here this:

A friend of mine uses Mac's since Years...
I can't stand the OS (His G4 PowerMac Crashes much more than an Windoze PC)
And have you ever tried to get spare parts for a
MAC ?
You always have to go to an Apple-Dealer where all Hardware is much more expensive than in a PC-Shop. My alternative will always be the AMIGA...

That's a near impossible feat to accomplish... I don't think anything can crash more than anything running Windoze!  My old Mac SE/30 running System 7 is more stable than my old 486 DX PC running Win95!!

STOOPYD Amiga, Commodore gave up th 128.

Didn't the Commodore 128 push 64 users out of the way?  And did it have some really weird memory issues with the older software.  Ah, wouldn't that mean that the software would need to be rewritten?

The above was written in jest, mate.  (Gotta remember to use those smilies)  Yeah, both the Apple IIGS and the C=128 were great machines for their time, and their time was too short.  Just for the record, though, there were NO memory problems with earlier 64 software in the  C=128.  Thats because, for some reason, Commodore elected to put a C=64 into the case with a new, incompatable machine which ran the 128 programs AND a CP/M computer.  It was like three whole computers in one.  Problem was, C=64 style programs didn't run any better on it, because they were running on a stock 64. It was, however, 100% compatable.

Hmm.  Maybe those guys who want the old chip set on the AOne board aren't that far off

True.  This is actually the reason I've always been put off by Macs.  Not only are they more expensive right out of the box, butevery little doo-hinkey you add on has to be specially built for Mac.  Not that they aren't wonderful machines, just that the cost is a bit steep.

All computers crash, it's just the nature of them.

But I would say that before Wondows 2000, the PC did crash way more than any other make of computer.  And this doesn't just include complete system crashes but partial crashes where bits of the machine would freeze before a reboot.

On the Mac though, most crashes usually involve the system just locking dead which is really annoying and on the many Mac's I have used over the years they have all done it.

On my current win2000 machines they never crash.  Well this machine I am typing this on did crash once about a month ago and just reset itself.

As for Amiga's they never crashed in WB as far as I remember but did like to crash to the nice read Guru screen a lot in games.
