Wow, Geforce FX 5700LE sucks!
« on: January 18, 2005, 10:49:16 PM »
Well it is not nearly as fast as I expected it to be. I realy don't like to spend $500 on a video card knowing in a year it will be worth $100. So, when I just recently built this system up(KT600 w/AthlonXP 3200 & 1GB PC3200) I got a 5700LE. Doom 3 while playable, just isn't getting the fram rates I'd expect.

What video card do I have to get to play Doom 3 all out in full quality with no slow down? Don't tell me X800 :-x
Someone has to state the obvious and that someone is me!

To get Doom 3 running at full speed with all options turned on, I'd say you'd have to be looking at an X600 or something similar.  I've had decent results with a Geforce 5900, but I didn't have anti-aliasing turned on.

The best AGP video card for bang for your buck is the
Geforce 6600 GT. check it out. it blows away most video cards, including 9800 pro and others. iv done tests at work myself and i own one. it runs doom3 full frames full detail no slow down whatsoever.

get one. and they are cheap too.

Hum,
well i played a reasoable game on a fx5200!
(super fast memory - and overclocked to 402 mhz)
(with a few options turned off and no background programs)

Though i would agree just now a Geforce 6600 GT is a good choise , untill 6 months time , and the new interfaces to replace AGP come out...

What frame rates are you expecting?? I am not sure of the specs on the 5700LE but I have a GeForce FX 5900 Ultra with an AGP 8x motherboard (running an athlon 64), and I have no problems..

Have you thought about overclocking the GeForce chipset with an overclocking utility and also overclocking the CPU? It can be done.. Also what is your AGP bus speed in the bios settings? Can you ramp that up some? I paid $250 a couple years back for my 5900 (which does supposedly have faster memory and bus, however it shouldn't be that much faster..)

You could always go out and buy a DUAL SLI PCI-Express motherboard and be up there with the gods :-)

I have a Gigabyte 6600GT PCI-e and it works wonderfully with Doom3 (included with card), FarCry, HalfLife 2, etc.  The PCI-e version was around $185, I'd expect the AGP to be similarly priced.
Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(

Framerates are a great hoax these days.
all these benchmarkers go out there and "benchmark" vidi cards. and they say "hey this card does 110 frames per second on doom 3!"

but what they dont tell you is a game looks like s h i t at 110 frames per second. because you can always see glitches on screen like scan lines and those crazy lines you see.
it's not PERFECTLY SMOOTH.

SO! what you need is card that can deliver a CONSTANT 30FPS
vsync'd to 60hz and WOW!! your $2000 video card that does 300fps on a benchmark is now doing 30fps but it's PERFECTLY SMOOTH.

dont be fooled by framerates! all you need is a good card that can KEEP the frames rolling. thats way more important.

Geforce FX 5700LE sucks!

I second that.

I own one of these (PNY Technologies FX 5700LE) and they range in the low end of the FX series along with the FX5200 and what have you.

In my humble opinion, calling it something with "5700" borders on deception, as its specs are closer to that of a Ti4200 (around 250 mhz on the core, 500 mhz for the RAM, 4 pixel pipelines).
Incidentally, that's what i originally had (it broke, the store swapped it under warranty to the 5700LE, since the Ti4200 was no longer in production at that time), so I'm not complaining, but the LE is certainly no match for the latest generation of games.

--edit--
I found Doom3 to be rather demanding and I doubt many systems can manage to run it properly with all the bells and whistles at a very high resolution, save for the top of the line ones, maybe.

You should consider you machine's specs as well. What do you have, just out of curiosity?

Yeah.  It's kinda painful.  Really, the whole GeForce 5xxx series are rather disappointing underachievers.

The Geforce 6xxx series seem to have picked up the slack.  I snuck to myself as a Christmas present -- A Geforce 6800GT.  So, as you said, I basically spent about $350 on a card, knowing in a year it'd be worth less than $100... BUT... it's simply stunning!  I upgraded to it from a couple-year old GF4Ti 4600.  (Which I had chosen to keep over a GF 5500 that a friend offered to sell me, as my 4Ti benched and played better than his 5500!)

Anyhow, going from the 4Ti to the 6800GT meant games that barely ran in 800x600 medium detail no AA/no ASF now get great framerates in 1024x768 full detail 4xAA/8xASF.

I was really impressed by the performance boost.  I hadn't seen a performance gain of that magnitude since I went from a Voodoo 3 to my old GeForce 2GTS.  ;-)

I've also heard nothing but good things about the 6600, if you want to keep a little tighter budget, it should be a great choice.

That's why you should never buy GeForce's that have: LE or XT or SE or MX on their name... It always means there is something missing/disabled...

I found this in a 5900 fx ultra review..

Quoting the review:

For their e-GeForce FX 5900 Ultra card, eVGA has bumped the core clock frequency to 500MHz. Yes, you read that correctly, 500MHz! As a result, the e-GeForce FX 5900 Ultra matches the fill rate of GeForce FX 5800 Ultra, arguably the 5800's biggest highlight. On top of the higher core clock speed, eVGA boosts the memory clock frequency to 900MHz. This feature nets the e-GeForce FX 5900 Ultra an additional 1.6GB/sec of memory bandwidth.

The review an be found at:

review from hardcore gamer

We have to remember that this series of cards aren't the current ones, and they added a lot of things like shader technologies for better cinematic effects. Nvidia really doesn't play the "we are faster" game with frame rate numbers..

Doom 3 was designed with the latest and greatest to show off the latest and greatest, not to play on the not so latest..   It's easy to complain that your card is running slow because you don't have the latest hardcore hardware. Especially on a game known for setting the benchmark for graphics standards on cards..

True. Excellent card. Although, I haven't had a chance to try it with Half-Life 2 yet, it does pretty good with Doom 3. Think I got it for just a little over 200 bucks.

True, that. Max, no more than 60fps for what we can perceive, anyway.
