all these benchmarkers go out there and "benchmark" vidi cards. and they say "hey this card does 110 frames per second on doom 3!"

but what they dont tell you is a game looks like s h i t at 110 frames per second. because you can always see glitches on screen like scan lines and those crazy lines you see.
it's not PERFECTLY SMOOTH.

SO! what you need is card that can deliver a CONSTANT 30FPS
vsync'd to 60hz and WOW!! your $2000 video card that does 300fps on a benchmark is now doing 30fps but it's PERFECTLY SMOOTH.

dont be fooled by framerates! all you need is a good card that can KEEP the frames rolling. thats way more important.

True, that. Max, no more than 60fps for what we can perceive, anyway.

The Geforce FX series weren't the best cards to play games. You could better pick an Ati 9600, Ati 9800, X800 or the NVidia 6x00 series.

But don't buy LE, SE versions of these cards. They crippled the memory bus.

A good value for money is buying the Nvidia 6600 GT. It's faster than a Ati Radeon 9800 Pro and 9800 XT. If you don't want to spend around $200, you could buy a 9600 XT.

It's a reasonable card to play games, but don't expect to run at very high resolutions.

Well it is not nearly as fast as I expected it to be. I realy don't like to spend $500 on a video card knowing in a year it will be worth $100. So, when I just recently built this system up(KT600 w/AthlonXP 3200 & 1GB PC3200) I got a 5700LE. Doom 3 while playable, just isn't getting the fram rates I'd expect.

What video card do I have to get to play Doom 3 all out in full quality with no slow down? Don't tell me X800 :-x

Doom3 will be alot faster once Nvidia add a feature to their driver that allows the engine to skip the rendering of all the BLACK PIXELS

I hated that game.

And if you have a GeForce Ti 4x card before making that decision, only the highest end ATi 9xxx and GeForce FX cards can outrun them in any worthwhile 'time to upgrade' fashion.  I was set on getting a 6600 GT until I heard that it spewed out a fair bit of heat, something I'm always trying to avoid now.

doom 3 is a game where full quality is meant to be played on non yet existing hardware. it seems that many people do not understand that because they can set everything to max in older games too...

also, if you want full quality why do you buy the absolute low end of the fx series? you should've atleast bought an FX5700 and not LE or SE to have a bit more power.

You're fed up with that too, huh?  If your framerate ever goes FASTER than your monitor's refresh rate, it just causes frame skipping.  All the game consoles use VSync, and they look fabulous with graphic chips that are several years old!  Why are PC users so hyper about bleep'n frame rates?!

I hated that game.

The only thing I liked about it is that it reminded me, vaguely, of Infestation (hence, my avatar).  Still, ID really didn't put that "advanced" engine to good use.  I don't know why Doom3 is still the benchmark used for all video cards.

Personally, I think my Radeon 9800 Pro is the kicks.  But, I also had to replace the friggin' tiny cooler with one of these.  Works great.

...and you all think Pentiums are insane heat factories!

@Waccoon

Love that avatar!  Have you tried using WHDLoad to run Infestation from harddrive?  It works really well and makes the game much more enjoyable.  Quite a remarkable 3d engine and sound on a stock A500.

What does the 5900 Ultra have to do with anything? I was talking about the 5700LE which seems to represent a dip in the (arguably already underpowered) FX line, that is if you follow the numbering scheme (low is bad, higher is better).

I already know the 5900's are relatively good performers, I use an XT one myself (clocked to about Ultra specs when needed).

...except 60hz is a headache inducing flicker fest.  Well, if you've been stuck using the Amiga's native video modes for fifteen years I guess it probably looks rock solid.

As already stated, cost! While price shopping the local show ~a month ago it appeared to be the best value. I paid ~$120 for the card, retail box. Considering my previous setup had a Geforce MX 440, this was a step up. It just wasn't as big a step up as i expected :-x

I tried to keep my upgrade in a certain budget, but I've already blown that budget and it looks like I will be dropping even more bread to buy a better GFX card. i guess I have to look in the $200-$300 range:-(
Someone has to state the obvious and that someone is me!

The point of bringing this up is someone was saying the entire line sucks. Also, my point was that he could probably overclock to get better performance (or at least acceptable)..

RivaTuner

Overclocking the nvidia with new drivers with page that claims frame rate increases in Doom 3..

Well yeah, but it wasn't me. I just don't understand you quoting the bit I said about the 5700LE, because this card does indeed suck for anything other than office work and 2 year old games.

I don't think it's worth the trouble with this card. I'm not sure if the chip on it really is a 5700, but in any event my particular 5700LE is a very poor overclocker, I only ever managed marginal increases with CoolBits. Seems to me that in case it really is a 5700 chip, it must be a very crippled one, because it comes nowhere near the 425 mhz on the core a full 5700 is supposed to run at.

Geforce 6600 GT. check it out. it blows away most video cards, including 9800 pro and others. iv done tests at work myself and i own one. it runs doom3 full frames full detail no slow down whatsoever.

get one. and they are cheap too.

True. Excellent card. Although, I haven't had a chance to try it with Half-Life 2 yet, it does pretty good with Doom 3. Think I got it for just a little over 200 bucks.

Yeah.  It's kinda painful.  Really, the whole GeForce 5xxx series are rather disappointing underachievers.

Like Intel's Itanium; the NV30 is NVIDIA’s own VLIW experiment gone bad i.e. they have issues with writing the JIT complier driver. NV40 uses SIMD/MIMD techniques just like ATI's R300/R400 families.

3DLab's P10 also uses VLIW designed core.

The vanilla 6800 is great card, better than the 6600GT,
when you can find a great deal on them.  I just received a
$105 rebate back from Best Buy after purchasing the card
with HL2.  I also received an extra 10% at checkout.  Since
the card also came with FryCry, this made the deal that
more attractive.  Unless, you can find a great deal on the
6800, then yes the 6600GT is the best bang for your AGP
buck.  Too bad the upcoming X800XL is PCI-E only.
