A dog will be genuinely pleased to see you when you walk through the door, a dog will defend you if it thinks you are being attacked, a dog will know when you are upset.
You obviously don't have much experience with cats (or maybe the wrong cats).
Sure, they are much more independant and not as needy as dogs (by far), but when I still lived at home (I can't have pets where i am now :-( ) the cats would come and greet me all the time, even jump into my arms at times, so that's just FUD you're spreading :-P
And you know that sound they make when you stroke them? That's called a pur, dude, and that means love :-)
I've had a few dogs in my life that I've enjoyed very much, but I can't see myself getting another one, they're just so stressful and needy (and dumb :-D).
