Unethical ebay sheisters
« on: May 04, 2004, 10:53:11 PM »
So I'm auctioning my A600 (and some rig) on ebay.

(for those interested...)My A600 rig

So dude, emails me asking if I would just sell it for my starting price + shipping.

(no one had bid)

Sheister.

I entered an agreement. This sounds like the sort of thing people have been complaining about for a long time.

What's a sheister?

I always reckon when I'm selling, that if someone wants me to end the auction early, its because they think they can get it cheaper.
Not only that, but having been the buyer so many times, I know how annoying....no, upsetting, it can be to watch an auction for 6 days, preparing to bid at the end, only for some bumfuck to end it early!

You did the right thing to tell him where to go.

Don't worry, you'll get 2 bids in the end and you will probably sell this lot for around $70USD. What you should have done is start with a low price and no reserve, and watch this auction go over $100USD and of course provide lots and lots of detailed pictures and description.

Charver == Chav, Ned, Townie Scum, Barry/Sharon ...

Name changes depending on area of country

Charver (Sunderland)
Ned (Glasgow)
Chav (Kent)
Barry (Cambridge)

Quite often drive underpowered cars (Saxos etc) with stickers, loud stereos worth 4x the value of the car and under car lighting. Often seen going around in circles in a car park 'race'.

Um, I'm not sure there's a direct American equivalent. Basically, a mentally and socially challenged juvenile delinquent.

I wouldn't recommend that. Everytime I put something up for real cheap, hoping it will go up like everyone says, it sells for the real cheap price at the last minute to one bidder. I say put it up for the least amount you want for it, and don't gamble that a one penny price will end up skyrocketting. Don't wanna lose an A600 for a penny.

@weirdami:

Depends on what you are selling, I guess. My point was that in this case, an NTSC A600 should easily fetch $100USD through bidding wars as it is a hot (not too hot though) item in N. America. It is OK to start low on it. If you put $50 as the starting bid, you potentially discourage bidders who would have went higher than that if properly motivated. Right now we are probably looking at 3-4 sniper bidders who are all waiting for the last 10 seconds and in the end they won't have enough time to raise a serious bidding war as they all assume that no one will touch the $50 price until the last minute.

Starting with low price creates a STIR in their heads and a lot of other bidders simply raise the price high and create demand for you. Of course, this isn't always the case, however like I said, if your item is fairly hot, you'll be able to pull it off.

He SHOULD have provided more pictures and description as this creates confidence within the bidders that the items are really special and that the seller is genuine, VS one blurry picture which paints a picture in their heads that says: "Here's my pile of junk...take it or leave it".

What's a sheister?

;-) Though it seems that some apply it without regard to profession, "shyster" is slang for a crooked lawyer.

 (And I say that as if there were another kind....)

So check out what he sends back to me...

>ooh right.  better not break the rules. LOL

I'm tempted to send one back tell ing him (as you Brits would) to "bugger off." Nice to know some folks have very little character.

Is that really what it says??? Well I don't know about all the little heads games, but I shoot from the hip baby. I wouldn't sell it for less than $50, I'd value it at more and have been good about answering questions for folks. If I don't sell it, so be it. Maybe this some sort of Fruedian deal... Maybe I really don't want to sell it. Plus, we're talkin' 50 bucks here, not a small fortune. I guess I'm just not hip enough for ebay.

And as far as I bid, I'd pay what it's worth to me and not a penny more...

P.S. I think it is a term for a lawyer, but I've heard it used for businesses that are less than ethical (for instance, car salesmen, repair shops). I think it's Yiddish.
