Dir Work 2.1 Config Master Needed
« on: July 18, 2017, 10:59:56 PM »
I'm a Directory Opus 4.x user since the early 90's and I've never become friends with other file managers but I've come to respect Dir Work 2.1 for it's sleek size and high config possibilities. Since i'm comfortable with DOpus and DW is so configurable I thought I make a config that look and operate as close to the "original" as possible. I have however found a few things I think is DW "limitations" but since I only have a DW2.0 manual at hand I'm hoping it might be something I've overlooked.

The first major issue is the DOpus button dogears. I don't think it can be made without mocking around with the button graphics to the point that it no longer act like other buttons but please tell me if I'm wrong cause I'd love to be wrong on this.

More importantly, is there a way to display a different button text when right clicking a button to highlight a secondary use of it (without sorting to loading different configs back and forth)?

Another thing I think might be impossible is DOpus's click-m-click functionality, any way to perhaps "emulate" it?

I have a minor issue with the sliders having the left mouse button qualifier ghosted, is there a way to add a left click function of your own to the sliders?

Last (and least), is there a way to make system correct menu dividers in DW2.1?

Any help is appreciated!

I've been a DirWork user for over 20 years and don't think I've ever had any issues with the things you've described.

Then again I never used Dopus, so perhaps I don't know what I'm missing.

I have a 166 page manual with the "2.1 addendum", do you have those resources already?

I have the 166 page 2.0 manual but not the 2.1 addendum.

Well the click-m-click feature of clicking one list and then quickly clicking the other list for an action is really handy. So is the alternative button text when a button have more than one use depending on what mouse button you press (and the dogears to show the button have such a use).

The other two minor issues are just issues I have as I try to make DW act and look like DOpus... I could continue with slider and path box colors but it's minor cosmetics.

Sorry to go slightly off topic, but are there any Dopus4 guides/manuals available on how to customize it?

There were many DopusIV helper disks. Maybe Aminet has those just search. Also all the magazines of the time released versions of DopusIV CUAmiga disk 100 me thinks. I simply kept my magazines out when I needed to know stuff. I also used other peoples config files to see how they set up buttons and menus etc. Again I thing there are quite a few config files that you can try out off Aminet. Just make sure you keep a copy of your own config file.

I spent my Amiga life setting up DOpus just the way I want it to work and I copy it to all my Amigas. Wouldn't be without it.

This should work ....

HELP: Directory Opus has a comprehensive built in
help facility. To use this press `HELP` on the
keyboard and then click any part on the program,
a help screen will then be displayed. You can
keep on clicking on things to get help until
you press `HELP` again.

THE BUTTONS:

ALL: Selects all drawers and files in the
source window - saving you time.
NONE: Deselects all selected files in the
source window.
PARENT: Moves back to the previous drawer
you were in.
ROOT: Moves back to the root directory.
COPY: Highlight one or more files in the
source window, click on copy and the file(s)
will be copied to the destination.
MOVE: Just like Copy, except the file(s) in
the source window are deleted after after
the copy operation.
RENAME: Click on one or more files and then
on this button and you`ll be asked to enter
new file names.
DELETE: Highlight files and drawers and click
here to delete them. WARNING. You can`t get
these back once you have deleted them.
MAKEDIR: Prompts you for a name and then
creates a drawer with that name in the source
window.
ASSIGN: To be covered in next TUTORIAL
CHECKFIT: Adds up the sizes of all selected FILES/
DRAWERS and sees if they will fit on the drive
in the destination window. The result is displayed
in the status bar.
GETSIZES: Similar to Checkfit but a quicker
approximation.
HUNT: search the selected files and drawers in the
source window for a given file name.
SEARCH: Scan through the files and drawers selected
for a given file name.
RUN: Executes the selected programs. You`ll be asked
to enter parameters, see the individual manual for
details of these perameters.
DATESTAMP: Changes the date stamp of the selected
files to that entered. For the current date press
the space bar and then return.
PROTECT: To be covered next TUTORIAL.
ICONINFO: Changes icon perameters, similar to
that given in the REQUESTER when you click on
INFO menu on the WORKBENCH.
ARC EXTRACT: Extracts files from compressed `LHA`
archives to the destination path. LHA is a common
compression system used by Public Domain software
and BBS systems. Not available on 1.3 Amigas.
ENCRYPT: Adds or removes password protection files.
Select a file, click on this and enter password,
now you can only access it if you know the password.
To remove the password click on this button and
enter the password with a minus symbol `-` at the
front of the password.
READ: Displays the selected TEXT files.
HEX READ: Displays a file using the HEX numbering
system, probably only useful to programmers.
SHOW: Displays an IFF, Animation, icon or font file.
PLAY: Highlight an 8SVX sound file and click on this
button to hear it.
PRINT: Print
PATH NAMES: These two allow you to type in PATH
names rather than clicking on drawers - if you
know the full path name this can save you a lot
of time.

Directory Opus: Dopus Library v22.6
Copywright 1990-94 Jonathan Potter
Compiled on Oct 31st 1994.

Thanks scuzzb494!!!!

No problem. I do have the very large boxed bound folder for DOpus, though over the years I have received quite a few configs from fellow Amigans and they reveal all I need to know about buttons and menus.

I have the 166 page 2.0 manual but not the 2.1 addendum.

It's only a one page, double-sided sheet, but may be helpful to you?  (attached)

Thanks, didn't help much with the config problem I face but nice to have a complete manual none the less.

With a bit of trickery I managed to get button dogears. They don't look 100% the same but still way better than I had it before... one hurdle down.

Anyone know if it's possible to make a button with more than 1 line of text?

The manual say %J makes a newline (CTRL-J ASCII 10) character... which doesn't result in a new line but a "square" character on screen.

Also tried making a variable with several lines but only the first line was displayed with using %Vvariablename%.

Probably you've already looked, but did you get the disk with all the different config files?  I remember with mine it had probably 10-15 different configs you could just "drop in" to use.  Might get some ideas from those?
