A2000 A2091 AztecMonster-CF Not Detected
« on: December 25, 2014, 09:23:45 PM »
I haven't had any luck installing an AztecMonster CF into an A2000 with a A2091 SCSI controller.  HDTools is not detecting the CF disk.  HDSetup reports that it is unable to format the CF disk when SCSI ID 6 is manually selected.

I've tried both 2G and 256M unformatted CF cards and neither were detected.  I'm using the AztecMonster's termination and not cable termination.

A2091 settings:

  • A2091 ROM version: 6.6
  • A2091 chipset version 33C93 revision 4
  • A2091 jumper settings:
   JP1 (memory size): 2M
JP2 (autoboot): disabled
JP5 (options):   LUN enable: off
Time out length: off
AztecMonster CF settings:

  • SCSI ID: 6
  • Termination: on
  • Power LED: lights up when A2000 is started
...the system freezes if the 2091's "autoboot" setting is set to "on".  I've left this setting off until Workbench is installed.

I can boot into Workbench using the 3.1 install disks.  Is there a DOS command I can use to test/verify the SCSI controller from Workbench?

Also, are there drivers that need to be installed for the A2091 which aren't included on the Workbench disks?  This may be the issue.  I bought the controller from AmiBay and it did not come with an install disk.

If drivers do need to be installed, is there a premade CF image available which includes the A2091 drivers?  Something like BetterWB or even ClassicWB would be great.  Assuming there is, how would one write the CF image to the CF card so that it would be bootable?  For example, I assume a UAE hardfile would need to be "imaged" to the CF disk somehow.  I'm using Linux, FYI.

Thanks in advance.

A2000 info:

Revision 6.2 motherboard
Kickstart ROM 3.1 version 40.63
DKB Megachip 2M chipram expansion
Indivision ECS
Picasso II RTG card

Interesting question because there could be so many answers.

Let's say that CF cards do not always "present" themselves as IDE drives and may say, "I'm used in a camera, or digital video recorder."  This is why there is the TrueIDE device by icomp.de; it says they are all IDE hard drives.  So try a few other CF cards or get one with WB 3.1 installed from Amigakit.

Now the hardware could be more up to date:

Your 6.6 ROM's are not the latest (Ver 7.0)
Your Western Digital controller is a Ver 4, not version 8, nor an AMD.

Finally, if you have version 3.1 Kickstart ROMs, you don't need a "driver" for the A2091.  I'm not sure about why it hangs with Autoboot on, I'd have to ask a few more questions.

As for the AztecMonster, you will have to wait for someone with experience with that to chime in.

Main questions! Is said adapter SCSI or IDE? Is your bus IDE or SCSI? Need to be consistent here.

As the AztecMonster is an SCSI CF card adapter, I'm guessing that He is using SCSI on the A2091 SCSI card.

The Manual is a fun read:

The manual is at: http://www.artmix.com/pdffiles/CF_AZTECMONSTER_MN_E_13.pdf

All spelling is per the poor bastard who wrote it up.

Nota Bene: This is a SCSI-3 adapter card with a 50-pin SCSI (1/2) connector with "upper [byte?] compatible," so I have no idea what the engineers were thinking -- a 16-bit adapter connected with an 8-bit bus?  Why not just an SCSI-2 adapter, or a 68-pin SCSI-3 connector?  It does have "UltrraDMA!"  This must be like having an amplifier that you can turn up to 11.

@anglosaxonusa

I hit the exact same problem as you trying to get the Aztecmonster scsi card working on the Amiga 2000 (and CDTV also). It is an awesome card and I really want to be able to use it like you also do!

You can see what I have tried on my blog entry if it is of interest...I would also be interested in a solution to this problem...

Link to my blog entry is here:

Hmm, Zorro2 bandwidth problem? Work on Zorro3 and accelerators? Curious.
