Raspian (which is now the official distribution) is very quick and well optimised for the Pi... X on the other hand is a piece of junk, really showing it's age. When doing any media playback use OGL or OVG directly.

Open up a command line and run your video using omxplayer, that uses hardware acceleration. Enjoy ;)

Im with pyrre, raspbmc is the way to go if you wan't to watch media files/streams :) Also some overclocking helps a tad extra :) But that's if you want to use it as a HTPC ofcource, I have been giving away PI's with raspbmc to family to use as HTPCS on their TV's and everyone of them are happy with it :)

I use Openelec for XBMC on mine. It makes a great addition to my TV, I was surprised and delighted that I can navigate using my TV's remote control.

Purchased the key for hardware decoding?  I wasn't aware of this; xbmc runs on my Pi in HD without any problems.

@kickstart: DISABLE Xorg on the Pi. You can do so by running the "raspi-config" command.
Then you use "omxplayer" to play videos and audio clips using the Rpi's custom video & audio cores (wich, in fact, are similar to the Amiga custom chips).

FullHD video and high-bitrate MP3, OGG or FLACs are perfectly playable on the Pi with no problems whatsoever. Xorg *is the problem*.
The Pi can even emulate a Sega MegaDrive and SegaCD, PC-Engine, NES, etc... at rock-solid 60FPS using the custom cores to scale the graphics to fullHD resolutions without using the CPU.
I made clean instructions here:

http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=56070

@other: he's talking about the default Raspbian distro, not RaspBMC or other alternatives. The fun part is to get all these things going on the Pi with a complete OS, not inside some crippled HTPC enviroment.

Talking about complete OS:es I run Ångström linux on my PI, I love Ångström and a few mods you can get the PND support and run most OpenPandora programs (recompiling may be needed), so if looking for an alternative experiance which tho requires some more tinkering I recommend Ångström.

If I had the spare time I would love to rebuild the OpenPandora rootfs for the PI, to many projects to little time :(

Thanks for all answers... im trying to use the pi like a "portable desktop" sometimes not like xbmc.

Then there are currently no OS operating properly on the pi, browsing with iceweasel on rapsbian is something slow and if use gnash is a pain, the problem for me is disable xorg, for people unfamiliarized with linux command line (like me) becomes difficult.

@kickstart: forget about Xorg on the Pi, really. You're going to get a VERY wrong impression of the machine's possibilities using that broken enviroment.
Linux command line is easy and you should go for it: learn and grow. It's a powerful OS and you're missing A LOT by not using it.
You can start with simple and rewarding tasks, like mounting a disk, navigating it's filesystem and playing a movie with OMXPlayer, then go for something harder like compiling RetroArch and playing SonicCD :) GNU/Linux is fun! Only people without abstraction capabilities will tell you otherwise.

Using a broken enviroment like Xorg doesn't mean learning how to use GNU/Linux: it's a poor excuse for a graphical enviroment, slow as a dog an ugly as hell.
It's all about learning while using a computer. You'll find it's very rewarding.

I suggest you give RISC OS a try. In my opinion, it's very easy to use, and is much faster than Raspbian. It's unique since it's not GNU/Linux.

Lol The Pi is a learning tool but I still can't believe what I've just read in an Amiga forum. Learning the command line seems like advising someone to learn MS DOS, but worse you may not be able to just "cd" to a drive when you plug it in. How things have changed from the Windows 3.11 runs on DOS therefore it's crap and you need a real UI and OS like the Amiga's ;)
