« on: August 12, 2013, 10:12:37 PM »
Hello I have a A4k 3.1 WB3x and I'm running 512GB CF
what would be a easy way to get me on the internet with that system.
Is there a serial networking to PC type access ?
I work in a think tank
My other car is a M109

If your A4000 has PCI slots then its ez and cheap, even free.

If you don't have PCI slots then good luck. :)  Cuz the only really easy way would be to use dialup with an old modem.

I have seen ppl sell Ethernet cards for A4000 but they charge half the price of adding PCI slots so... its just not a really good investment.  But of course you are free to do whatever you like :)

Supposedly Jens (Individual Computing) is going to be releasing a Zorro-based networking card soon.  Several people have been dumping their old Amiga networking cards on ebay based on that speculation lately, trying to make some $$ before the release of the new board renders the old cards completely obsolete.  So based on all that speculation you could look for an old card being sold, or wait for a new card to be released.  ;)

Alternatively there are ways to use a serial link, am sure someone with instructions will come along soon.  Good luck!  :)

Aah!  I was just reading on another forum that the pre-order period for the X-Surf 100 ends August 14th?  Why, why?  I just pre-ordered a bunch of other Amiga hardware last week and my bank account is giving me the stink eye, LOL.  :D

the easiest and cheap way is to get a 56k external modem (serial)
you can find one for 5$ aprox in ebay or any other place
you are limited on 56k speed but for aminet and some ftp is ok

Project Links:

http://lallafa.de/blog/amiga-projects/plipbox/
http://lallafa.de/blog/amiga-projects/plipbox/plipbox-hardware/

costs less than $20.00US to build.
It's no speed-demon by today's standards, but it is very functional ethernet connectivity, and it's something the community has needed for a long time.

Hats off to Lallafa for a great idea, implementation, and documentation.

Faster than MAGPLIP, and slower than Ariadne/Xsurf..

That's about all I can say at this point. Lallafa may have some approximate real-world speed figures somewhere on the blog/project pages.

I need to get a copy of Roadshow before I can do any kind of real speed comparisson (MiamiDX is slow).

At a very early stage in the project, Lallafa stated on his blog:

"On the software side there is still some clean up left to do but all basic things are working and I am already surfing the net with up to 50 KiB/s on my Amiga…"

Since then, he has done some substantial refinements/changes to the software on the AVR programming as well as the AMIGA sana II driver.

By far the simplest method is just using a serial null-modem cable plugged into an online PC. If you have a PC running Linux/Unix/BSD or a Mac you can connect with a small program called MultiLink.

This is what's involved: The Amiga and PC are connected via the serial cable. A small command is installed on the PC side and can be run from startup so it's always ready to accept the Amiga's connection. On the Amiga side you open a Terminal program and establish the connection with the PC. You run the Multilink program on the Amiga, and you can close the Telnet program. You now have a fully working internet connection using the PC's TCP/IP stack rather than running one on the Amiga.

The connection is surprisingly fast, faster than a 56k modem really, completely acceptible for browsing the web, chatting on IRC or even running a VNC client, having your PC's desktop (and modern browser) accessible in an Amiga window or screen, multitasking away with your other applications.
