Just remember that you may need to do hardware timing fixes on Your Amiga motherboard if you go with Individual Computers ACA123x Accelerators. (The 64 and 128 megabyte acc. boards)

Not to worry thrn with regards to doom. Is there any point in me getting an 030 then if im just gonna play old amiga games like frontier and settlers or am I just being really silly? Who woild benefit from say a 30mhz 030 with 8mb of ram and wbo would benefit from 128?
Im nuzt trying to make sure I'm covered if I become adventurous.

Rob

I don't think the 030 is too fast for want you want, so if you can afford it you might as well get it.

The fastest one on amigakit seemed to be 030 @ 30mhz with 128mb. Is this fast enough to play 3d games like doom alienbreed 3d and quake conversions?

An 030 should be fast enough to play AB3D and Doom.  Quake pretty much requires an 060.  Agreed, check youtube for videos different people have posted of them playing these games, and their relative hardware specs.  Good luck!  :)

@Damon

How did you manage to get the amiga from Petro? I've mailed twice expressing interest with no response. What kind of info did you put in your initial mail to him?

Also what kind of condition did yours arrive in? Did you get instructions and were the cables and psu discoloured. I've read some forums saying the extras are sometimes missing or come in poor condition.
I thought the whole point was tonget something new but old.

Thanks.
Rob

I just sent an email per his instructions when he was taking orders. The biggest PITA was arranging bank transfer payment as I'm in the US (xe trade is the way to do it, IMO). Just make sure to get in early on the next round and you should have no problem getting one.

Mine was from the second batch, came with sealed WB floppies but no books or polys. The PSU and mouse had a little bit of that brown residue that wiped right off. The computer itself was mint and unused, absolutely spotless. Inside looked perfect.

That said, they sat in storage in India for years, and have been shipped around a few times. Because of that my expectations were checked, but fortunately the computer itself was perfect. I can believe others weren't as happy.

'030 is the way to go on the accelerator IMHO, ideal would be to pick up a clean Blizzard 1230, or even a GVP 1230-II with RAM (I have one of the latter, it's stellar for playing old games via WHDLoad and demos).

Whats this brown sticky residue that people speak of on the wires? Lol.
Sounds awful. I can't beleieve there is NOS still kicking about. It's ridiculous after such a long time of the company going bust. Surely someone somewhere should have sold every last one by now!! :S

You missed the story.  Petro T. was in charge of sales back during the Amiga Technology days.  Apparently he sold (or swindled, depending which story you read) a shipping container full of A1200's to some company in India, probably to be turned into cheap character generators for studios, but who wound up never using them.  They sat forgotten for 17-some-odd years, then he somehow got back in touch with the people who he'd sold 'em to (probably over beers at the pub), who remembered they still had 'em and agreed to sell 'em back.  He then shipped 'em to Germany, and is now selling them on a first-come, first-served basis basically at his cost.  It's a great deal for a NOS A1200 if you're able to get one, and most have been working well for people despite that they could have bad caps or any other manner of ailment which affects computers of this age.  As for the brown residue?  Who knows, probably curry powder or something, LOL.  ;)

Why the urge to play quake or Doom, weren't those pc only games and just fan ports for the Amigas ? I think i'd rather play those particular games on my pc where they prob run as they should.
I gots me a Video Toaster...where do I put the bread in ?!?!

I dont really want to play quake or doom. I just see it as the absolute limit of what I'll ever want to do with a  amiga. Just to be safe. I've got an animal of a pc, I just want to pretend I live in the early nineties again. :)
