SCART question
« on: March 23, 2013, 03:48:03 AM »
Hi: i have the chance of getting a Philips Matchline 33" TV. It is a PAL M- PAL-N and NTSC system. Among many other features, it has SCART connectors.

My doubt: if i connect my Amiga trough SCART, does the TV system have influence? I mean, if my Amiga is european PAL (PAL B), would i be able to connect it trough SCART and watch in colour, or it would be out of sync/black and white?

Thanks

First thing to know is that PAL-N is 50Hz, same as Europe... so you won't get picture roll.

We use PAL-I here in the UK, and Europe uses PAL B/G usually - but the difference is just in the sound carrier location. If you're using SCART, the sound is carried seperately anyway.

SCART provides three methods of getting the data from the machine to the TV: Composite, S-Video and RGB.

If your TV supports composite and your machine supports composite (which Amigas do), you will get a composite picture.
If your TV supports S-VIDEO only, you will get a composite picture probably, but possibly nothing at all.
If your TV supports RGB, and your machine supports RGB (which Amigas do) you will get a very clear picture.

Basically, I'd say you have a very good chance of getting a very good picture with sound, but you should invest in an Amiga->SCART RGB cable rather than using the composite video plug on the Amiga (or A520 modulator) itself.

Hope that helps!

Yes, ditch the A520 and get a SCART cable. Composite sucks, RF even more so.

If your Amiga SCART lead only connects to the 23 pin D connector, then it will almost certainly only have RGB available to the TV.

SCART is RGBs, as is the 1084s I hooked up an NTSC Apple II GS to my PAL 1084s and I didn't get a picture roll, so I guess the sync's allright as well :)

Thanks for your answers.

Yes, my idea is to use that tv with SCART to Amiga RGB port. No doubt about that. I will invest in that cable for sure.

But...concerning different PAL video systems, here in Argentina, i would need a transcoder/converter (cant remember the exact name) to be able to see in colour and not b/w the european PAL tv system. So, i was wondering if this would be the same case with this tv which can handle argentinian/brazilian/american tv modes (pal n/pal m/ntsc). My Amiga is european, so i guess tv out is pal b/g/i, not the ones we use here.

To sum it up: if i use the scart/rgb cable do the Amiga and the tv have to have the same tv system, or it has nothing to do using this cable? Correct me if im wrong with this example: if i have an american Amiga using a 1084 made in germany, using rgb cable, will i see it in full colour? And viceversa.

Please somebody confirm me this! Im talking about a 33" lovely Philips crt tv, which i think i will also be able to use it with many consoles as well ;)

Thanks!

PAL and NTSC standards define both frame rates and colour encoding. If you are using RGB, then the colour encoding is not used. You will always get full colour using RGB. So as long as your TV can handle the frame rate then it should work fine.

i just checked i do have super highres interlaced wich should be 1280x512 it seems , though mine says 1344x542 for some reason.

and i can change to that but its not a prety sight and the fonts look very small and someway distorded in the text.

is that do to ime running the stardart composite out from the a1200

that would clear up totaly like digital lcd with a scart cable like that ?
