@gertsy,

Legal/illegal roms, hey I don't think Commodore would mind, they are gone. Would like to know who bought the rights, and if they can prove it. Last I heard was gateway had all the rights. but may have sold them to someone else. Anyway does anyone really care about an old worn out OS that is so defunct that it can't even play a DVD.

I have no idea what your talking about, so here is a doggy with a small pancake on his head.

MorphOS is a MAC done a little better

Of course it can play a DVD. Why would you think otherwise ? Yes a physical 68k machine doesnt have the grunt, but thats nothing to do with the OS.
Near as I can tell this is where I write something under the guise of being innocuous, but really its a pot shot at another persons/peoples choice of Amiga based systems. Unfortunately only I cant see how transparent and petty it makes me look.

If you have AmigaForever, one of the easiest ways to transfer files is, I believe, included.

AmigaExplorer gives you a drag/drop - pointy/clicky way to transfer files using a NULL modem (serial) cable or Parallel xfer cable.  (Or I think I heard network also??  But I assume your Amiga isn't networked..)

Unfortunately, I haven't used Amiga Explorer...

If you don't have a parallel or serial port on your PC, don't worry.
A USB - serial adapter is usually like $10 or so on e-bait...

It's slowish, but it works fine.
(I don't use AmigaExplorer, but I use some other serial/null software to transfer files.)

AmigaForever has a good page on their site about cables you can use with the AmigaExplorer software..

Good Luck...

I had this very same problem a while back wanted to back up my files/have a virtual version of my machine/set up, the easiest way for me was to pull out my Amiga IDE hard drive and connect it up to Windows machine, it will try to suggest formatting it skip that and then in WinUAE it should automatically find the hard drive and then you can boot from it and make a backup.

I'd highly recommend Amiga Forever, it offer quite a bit more than WinUAE on its own and is not too much to pay (£19.99) to own every Amiga ever made legally, and your supporting WinUAE as Clonte donate and are the main supporter of the program and have also supported Aros efforts with its custom kickstart and various other areas to, so I dont think it much to ask for.

Recommended by me.

I've used WinUAE for years now (ever since my miggy became defunct). I bought AF2011 (and got the free upgrade to 2012 ;-) as I just wanted to, simple as that.
I personally recommend the Amikit install ( http://amikit.amiga.sk/ ).
This updates the look and feel of AmigaOS and adds in a heap of stuff you'd otherwise spend ages finding. The later versions of AF have Amikit directly linked, or it's available for a direct download from the link above.

As to transferring your files/system across, expert advice can be found over at http://eab.abime.net/

I am surprised to see Amikit mentioned so late in this thread. Granted, Amikit is based on AmiAUE, but it adds many excellent files.
You must create your own ROM image - but this is very easy to do. Well worth looking into...
A2000 GVP 40MHz \'030, 21Mb RAM SD/FF, 2 floppies, internal CD-ROM drive, micromys v3 w/laser mouse
A1000 Microbotics Starboard II w/2Mb 1080, & external floppy (AIRdrive)
C-128 w/1571, 1750, & Final Cartridge III+

I've owned and still have many Amigas from over the years (see sig), but I still got AF first 2006 then 2010.  It's a great product.  The emulation is almost perfect except for sound (Paula emulation).  I still use Deluxe Music quite a bit.  And it has trouble playing back those samples.  Perhaps with faster machines, that will be overcome.  Like others, I use AF to set up hard disks before putting them in the machine.  AF helps because so much of my software is now in DMS format (which I did years ago to preserve them).  It's much easier to install that way than with floppies (faster too).  I've it with 1.3 on my A500, 3.9 on my A2500 and A1200.
A1000 - 2 Floppies, 2 MB RAM, OS 1.0-1.3
A500 - 170 MB HD, 8 MB RAM, OS 1.3/2.04
A2000 - 350 MB HD, 8 MB RAM, A2630, OS 2.04
A2500 - 540 MB HD, 8 MB RAM, A2630, OS 3.9
A1200 - 20 GB HD, 64 MB RAM, Blizzard IV
Amithlon - 49 GB HD, 768 MB RAM, PIII-1G
AROS - 80 GB HD, 2 GB RAM, P4-3.2GHz

Well, didn't realize that this would open such a can of worms.

Thanks for all the input.

Will see what I can do with it all.
