Is my A1200 dead??
« on: July 09, 2011, 08:56:58 AM »
Hi,

I've been using my A1200 for a couple of days after a long period stored in a drawer. It was working fine yesterday but today it is refusing to boot up.

At first the "insert floppy" screen came up. I had seen this screen from time to time before, and normally it disappeared if I switched off the computer and pressed slightly the FastATA controller which I did this time.

Now, the A1200 doesn't search for floppy during the boot process and the HDD and Power leds stay ON. The A1200 does nothing, no video signal at all.

Seems like the motherboard can be dead... is it?

I've tried to boot with both mouse buttons pressed in order to get to early boot options screen, but the problem seems to be more important because the computer boot sequence is not reaching this point. No floppy is being searched for during boot process, either.

I've tried to boot without the accelerator board fitted in and the problem persists, so the accelerator is not a problem.

Also I'm using an ATX power supply with Ian Stedman adaptor and, as my external Atapi ZIP and DVD are powered and perfectly able to eject its floppies and trays, the problem seems not to be related to the PSU either.

I've also disconnected the hard drive from the FastATA controller to force the "insert disk screen" but it doesn't show up.

Keyboard seems to work properly, at least the computer tries to boot up each time I press the key combination Control + LAmiga + RAmiga.

My mobo is a rev 2B.

All kind of ideas and suggestions are welcome!

If it has been stored for a long time and suddenly under a lot of use my guess would be that over time the elctrolyte in the capacitors has broken down and in using it they've destroyed them selves.

Assuming you've tried all the basic steps:

Tried another PSU
Tested all Video outputs
Made sure Roms are seated correctly (For this I'd remove the FastATA and fit Roms directly)

You should get the Purple Rom screen even without any keyboard/mouse/floppy connected but there may be a delay of up to 30 seconds.  If you're not even getting this far the I'd look to have the Capacitors replaced.

All the best,

Steve.

Problem solved.

Finally there was no need to remove the FastATA controller, just needed to press it a little bit more against the mobo because the ROM chips were not making contact properly.

Buffff... what a relief :)

My miggy is still alive.

Good news! Have fun with your 1200.. one of the coolest amigas.

To all the noobs that read this thread. If you ever are "pressing on chips" or moving things attached to the amiga, make sure not only is the psu OFF but that its COMPLETELY unplugged from the amiga so there is no power at all. Evn though the switch is "Off" there is still some juice and something weird could arc and fry stuff.
