Automatic login and ignore list
« on: June 12, 2011, 11:51:42 AM »
Hi Amiga.org team,

I have a small ignore list setup on my profile (just a very short list of members whose posts/threads I'd rather not read), but I find that it's quite difficult to use in practice.  The first problem is that I have to manually login each time I visit the site, and usually I forget to do that while I'm browsing threads so the ignore list is then not in effect.

Would it be possible for the site to have an automatic login option?

Secondly, I think the ignore list could be improved somewhat.  At the moment the ignore list is only partly effective because if members quotes another member's post in their replies to a thread, then the post will be displayed regardless of whether the quoted member is on your ignore list or not.

It would be great if the ignore list could also catch these problems and blank posts by those qho quote members that are on the ignore list.  This would need to be a selectable option of course.

I think the ignore list is quite a nice little feature that deserves some time spent on improving it.  It would save a lot of agro on the forums if more people used it, in my opinion.

Thanks - and keep up the good work with the forum!

AH

No offence, but forum blinders are for weenies. That being said, folks who want to wall themselves off even further should probably learn how to write grease monkey scripts instead of expecting webmasters to mold the site to placate users personality defects.

Well, it's not a case of having a personality defect - it's just that there are certain posts I'd rather not read and the ignore list is quite good for that.

I think that proper use of the ignore list is prefferable to the mindless and pointless arguing that goes back and forth between some members.  That's pretty much the kind of thing I'm trying to ignore - I don't have any personal problems with any specific members themselves.

What is a grease monkey script? I'll look that up.

It's an extension to firefox for altering web content: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greasemonkey . If you came up with a good ignore script on the client side you could filter out stuff whether or not you are logged in. Some of the folks on moobunny made one to filter out the spam on that site.

I shall look into that - thanks.

You might be able to find something already precanned for vbulletin.

Indeed, that script works absolutely perfectly!

Thanks for the link - much appreciated.

Those greasemonkey scripts could be useful for all kinds of cool things.  I'm going to look into this further!

@AppleHammer

We are not sure the forum software supports the features you are requesting but will investigate.

@koaftder

Thanks for the suggestions.

I didn't know until recently that it was possible to block someone on amiga.org.
I am deeply shocked that something like that might be possible on an amiga forum where friendship should be prevalent.
With no more than 100 or 200 regular posters, it makes absolutly no sense to block some users among our fellow amigans. Why not just ignore the whole forum and remain alone with no one bothering you? No one is forcing you to connect here to read messages.

Personally, I agree that resorting to an ignore list is childish.
You can't ignore certain posters without electronic censoring?
Do you feel compelled to answer posts that offend you?
How do you deal with the possibility that your filter may exclude you from a post that tickles that compulsion?

I have been here since the last calendar millennium and have only resorted to using the ignore list in the last few months. Given that my last ignore/block anywhere was Timothy Rue on usenet, you can see how often I resorting to using this facility, when available.

I feel AppleHammer's pain and suggest that passive aggressive comments calling it a personality defect contributes to the problem rather than helping.

Gotta agree on that comment... :)

I did try the ignore list once on the advice of the mods but soon put that down to bad advice. In the real world even if someone says something I don't like or disagree with I would never walk away or just ignore them... :)

I would simply argue/ debate my point or answer back in kind until one of us finally gave up and called it quits... :)

You won't learn much in life if you just conveniently ignore others just because they have a different point of view from yourself... :)

I think I should clarify that I very much enjoy using the forum and I have no personal issues with (in terms of disliking) any members here.

I personally don't feel compelled to answer such posts, but unfortunately there are a few members here who do and so what we end up with is interesting threads being skewed off onto a tangent of ridiculous arguments and bickering.  I am not the subject of these exchanges so I am not personally offended by them, I would just prefer not to be trawling through them when I'm reading the threads.

There are a couple of members here (only a couple) whose contribution to the forum seems only to be silly bickering, arguing, or otherwise skewing thread topics off on a tangent.  I'm not trying to censor that (as you put it), I'm happy for everyone else to read it and respond to it if they want to, but it's my personal preference that I'd rather not.

That's all this is really.  It's got nothing to do with being childish, and everything to do with my personal preference.  Of course, you are entitled to disagree if that's your personal preference, but that's why the user preferences are individual - we each favour different methods of interacting with the forum.

I agree and actually my use of the ignore list is similar to yours - very infrequently and a very small number of members on there (one in my case, actually).  It's not a case of being childish or having personality defects, it's just that the member in question does not add any positive contribution to the forum (in my opinion) and often is the source of discontent between other members.  I'm not the subject of this discontent so I'm not the one being offended, I'd just rather not be trawling through these posts when I'm reading an interesting thread.  Personal preference, that's all.
