Ogg vorbis on AmigaOS, how?
« on: December 19, 2003, 01:21:12 PM »
Hi,

I've seen vorbis_tools was released on AmigaOS. I've tried it on a csppc/060. Vorbis tools only support the 68k so it was very slow, and hangs up every second. It uses ixemul.library and its very slow as you know :-)
Are there a ppc version? powerup, warpos?

Are there any other ogg vorbis players (or plugin for existing players) which can play this format on a ppc AmigaOS?

If not.. why can't somebody make one? :-)
Is it hard to compile the 68k vorbis tools to ppc? and make a plugin to Amigaamp or any other player to use the ppc vorbis tools?

what do you think?

regards

neongod
(Classic Amiga user:)

ps.: ogg rulz, mp3 *****  :-D

SongPlayer

MorphOS version has Ogg, not sure if the 68k version has it too.

According to amiga developers and elite users, ogg is useless. MP3 is the only format worth using, since it is has commercial support. The fact that there are ogg-players for anything from cellular phones and PDAs to dedicated players, home entertainment systems and even Windows and MacOS, is to be ignored. MP3 is just soooo much better than ogg vorbis anyways; the mp3 files are much smaller and have way better quality, ogg files have crappy sound and are way bigger.  Also, there are tools to convert those few odd files you might find to mp3, so you can play them on your mp3 player. You will then also notice how crappy the sound quality of those oggs really are.

Shame on you for bringing this topic to the surface again.  :-x

Yes Mos is supported.. but I have no mos and I didn't want it. I'd like to use my AmigaOS :-)

So.. I will try the MpegGui.. thanks.

But it seems there are no warpos/powerup ogg decoder... ?

Songplayer doesn't support ogg on 68k, as I know. And it would be very slow anyway :-)

I can't quite tell if you're joking or not, but of course converting an ogg to an mp3 will sound like crap, for the same reason that taking an mp3 and reencoding it to a second-generation mp3 will sound like crap, you're throwing out some more data in addition to the original encoding throwing out some data, regardless of the format.

Personally, I hope my mp3/wma cd player gains ogg support in the next firmware upgrade for it.

@neongod

IIRC, the only PPC players I know of are for MorphOS.
Try blazedmongers new Free Universal Computer kit, available with the GUI toolkit Your Own Universe, the popular IT edition, Extremely Reliable System for embedded work, Enhanced Database development and Wide Area Development system for telecommuting.

And when will we be able to get MOS for our Blizz boards?

I'm sorry for the misunderstanding, but I was searching for Classic AmigaOS PPC versions of any ogg player. I mean WarpOS or PowerUP versions.

I know that the vorbis tools have MorphOS support and there are other players on MorphOS which can play ogg, like Kaya, as I know...

I totally agree with kolla.

OGG is kinda some dull format. I encoded songs with same Kb rate, and turns out the OGG format is chunkier then mp3 itself.  Why would you want OGG support if you cant use them to any portable mp3 players?  :-?

I don't want to use portable mp3 players.

I have many music in ogg format and they sounds far better than the mp3. I've compared them many times. By the way, ogg uses variable bitrate, so I don't think that you can compare mp3 and ogg on the same bitrate..

The question was not about why ogg is better or not than mp3. The question was, are there any players for warpos or powerup that can play this format? :-|

now.

WHAT? where did you get this bull from? A decent oggvorbis encoded at 128kbit is of same or sometimes higher quality than a mp3 encoded at 192kbit. Also oggvorbis is open source, so no licensing issues like with mp3..

Edit:
hehe.. am not not very good in sensing sarcasm over forum  ;-)

Joking? Would I ever be joking?

I was being sarcastic, not the same.

And those arguments I brought forward was argumentsthat was tossed in my face when I wanted ogg support, months and years ago.

Personally the lack of ogg support basicly has meant that I sadly have stopped using amigas for sound as well, as most of the files I have are oggs. My experience is that ogg gives more value/size, and I use it on all my devices, except the amigas, be it phone, pda, workstation, media centre...  8-)

There is afaik one program that will play ogg on amiga - Frogger.
