So I hate to be on-topic and all...

While a 3000 or 4000 is very expandable, it'll also cost him at least 200 bucks extra (and thats aiming low). Throw in a ton of money to get upgrades for it.

He already stated he wanted to expand his 1200, so why not point him in the right directions there? :)
Especially if he's on a budget

I made a wee list up at the beginning of the thread on what RedNova should be looking to buy if he really wants to expand his A1200... :)

But we really need to know what he aims to do with it in order to advise him on the best way to go... :)

Hi,

Was this the list you gave him to get him started, I chose 4 of those items off the list myself I sure did. I picked items 3, 4, 5, & 6. Sorry I didn't pick 1 or 2 because I bought my Blizzard board when they first came out.

1. Blizzard060 60Mhz 128MB RAM...
or
2. Blizzard030 50Mhz 128MB RAM...

3. FastATA MKIII Buffered Interface...

4. DVD/CD Re-Writer...

5. SubWay USB Device...

6. Cocolino Wireless Mouse Adapter...

Now the only other thing I did was bought a lyra keyboard adapter, so I could tower my A1200 board, and since I cannot find a Bvision card, I just might swing for a mediator board because I have an old Voodoo board.

Now why didn't I bother to upgrade my A4000, because a PPC board cost about 3 times as much as a PPC board for the A1200, but I did buy a GVP IV 24 board, and a Picasso II board and a Buddha board for my A4000, but I am still using the lowly A3640 card for speed.

Now to magnetic and picture copy matic. Please read the post, and you will find out that Franko was right at his advice. He did not disagree that the A4000 is the flagship of the Amiga's (personally I believe it is the A3000 because even Dave says "Commodore made us butcher the A4000 so that it was half the computer we wanted it to be".

Dave Haynee.

OK, alright.

Intergrity ? You really think you have any after the crap youve been posting ? Dont like Franko, that's fine, but I fail to see how making yourself look like more of a goose and contributing to annoying most people that use this site gives you integrity.

FFS, knock it off will y'all ? Other people use this site too you realise? It's not here for you, franko and your lapdog (who's name I currently forget) to take childish pot shots at each other.
Near as I can tell this is where I write something under the guise of being innocuous, but really its a pot shot at another persons/peoples choice of Amiga based systems. Unfortunately only I cant see how transparent and petty it makes me look.

Intergrity ?  Isn't that what you get when you eat sandy food?
As opposed to Integrity. Which isn't something you have or hold. It's how others perceive you. Just like arrogance.

Rednova : Don't forget you get a free PCMCIA slot on the A1200 which is very handy.  I have both machines and I tend to use the A1200 as I find the PCMCIA slot very versatile.  Even though the A4000 is connected to the same monitor as my everyday PC.

..I guess its not possible to remove all off-topic posts from this thread?

Right, on-topic, I just wanted to say that I had an unexpanded a1200 and a4000 and in the end I choose the a1200 for my 'upgrade path', since thats the only machine that can scale right down to basic 2MB 020 cpu by the press of a button. apart from that, a  a towered a1200 offers a lot more space than a desktop a4000.

As far as upgrades go, the mentioned ACA 030 is great, as is a second-hand blizzard 1230 or even 1260 (although for that money, please consider the blizzardppc instead). You' ve got to understand that you're stuck with AGA, which is very slow on higher resolutions. I would recommend an indivision too and I bet you have a 3.5" harddrive in there already.

good luck expanding and enjoying!

Personally Id never buy a bppc again and especially an '040 based one. Id prefer an '060 anyday. For classic use the ppc side is very limited plus restricted by the 680x0 cpu anyway, and for an NG option (os4.x,mos) its too slow. Sure the OS may run ok, but what use is an OS when the software runs badly? The only good thing about the bppc when I had it was the expansion connector with which I addeda Grex. Never again would I buy such a system though.

I think the general concensus is (without doing another survey), as far as classics go, the A1200 with a good accelerator is a handy little machine.  I agree.  I'd get an indvision too if I didn't have 2 LCD monitors that work at 15k and VGA.
It's not hard to get on the A1200 banned wagon, err, hem, bandwagon, sorry.

Ahh the serenity..TG...

Hi,

Don't know I towered mine, went pretty smooth, used old server case I had laying around, now I remember why I shut down that server, it had a weak power supply.

I have a lyra 2 keyboard adapter (AmigaKit) works great, and if I wanted I could use expensive PC keyboards on my Amiga. I especially like the one where you could program the keys and program the actual letters and stuff on them, that way you could program a key to have a lit up Amiga "A" key on the keyboard, saving my pennies know for one, they only cost $1500, is that expensive enough for you.

smerf

I just meant finding all the bits to tower an A1200 cheaply in one place was probably a headache. If you do though best to get a nice A1500/2000/3000/4000 keyboard :)

I would agree with that given the very reasonable ACA cards out now.

I see the mighty Ban Hammer has been deployed on three of the posters here.  I hope this is a temporary "slap on the wrist" thing.

Ditto. I don't miss my 040/BPPC at all.

An 060 card is a much better investment IMO.
