Who on Amiga.org have you met in real life?

I used to go to NCAUG meetings years ago, but that's been so long ago I have forgotten names/handles.

NCAUG is still around, but we have not had a meeting (or a venue to hold a meeting) for awhile ...

Undoubtedly there are several users who have met me at Amiga Retro Aachen in 2002, some demo parties or local amiga user group meetings... I'm sorry but I'm just horrible with names. ;-)

Seriously though, I've probably met a few people in the UK over the years (through buying and collecting in person), but no-one whom I knew to be an A.org-er at the time.
I nearly met Steve Jones (ClusterUK) a few months ago when he collected an A1200T from my house, but I was out at work when he actually visited. I've met Binox's dad (Luke himself was out at work when I visited), and dropped some 68K/Amiga reference books off at his house, although I think he frequents EAB more than this site.

I generally communicate by PM, e-mail or forum postings - I don't really 'get' IRC, and I'm an unsociable 8ugger most of the time in person. :-) I personally like the considered approach that forums/mailing lists allow in terms of constructing and considering postings prior to submission.

I've tried to get out to LAG meetings a few times (and intended to do Bletchley Park in 2010) but something always gets in the way. :-/
As far as I know (from "Map of Amigan" type projects) there is only one other active Amigan in Hull (TonyYEB). Two Amigans does not a user group make.

It'd be good to get down to a curry night though next time I'm in the capital; in my mind I'm only an associate member of the Curry Club. (Just make sure the Tarka Dahl is nice and thick - I hate watery dahl!).

I've probably met a few at the VCF last year and the odd ANT I've managed to head along to, but there are very few Amigans in Ireland so most of the time I wouldn't have the opportunity... I'll put ClusterUK and MikeyC on the list, but I've no idea who else - either their real names or their pseudonyms...

Funny you said that. I'm half deaf as well but that never stopped me going out and meeting people.

Being born completely deaf and never having the chance to learn language and social skills is very different to losing some of the volume in one of your ears. It also affects the way people act towards you. You may tell people you have trouble hearing and they can raise their voice for you to hear. I tell people I'm deaf and that's the end of the conversation. They get uncomfortable and walk away to find someone else to talk to.

Funny and true story, I once tried learning sign language however after two lessons the teacher told me that due to my short, stubby fingers it was like I was speaking with a lisp.

In alphabetical order,  I met bbrv, frodon, jacadcaps, logain, lt56,  minator, palpatine, pyromania @ discreetfx, senex, zacman, zylesea.

I am also somewhat sure I was introduced to Piru at Aachen but I wouldn`t bet my life on it (I definitely remember talking to CISC and Henes but they aren`t amiga.org members like a number of other MorphOS / Am*ga people I have met.)

I live about 20mins away from Novacoder, never met him though.

Being half blind (night blind, and depth blind, no depth perception etc, someone explain 3d to me please?), and only see out of one eye at a time.
Therefore, I don't drive Cause it is quite a hindrance to drive when your eyes can take upto 2 seconds to focus. :/. Since movement makes my eyes switch.

So I have never gone to an Amiga Meetup, cause it is too hard to get to via Public transport.

When i said half deaf i meant something else. I have moderate to severe tinnitus but i still have my hearing

You say people act differently when you tell them you are deaf and I think i would value this as i could use it as a way to identify genuine friends from the people pretending to be your friends which is really annoying

Hugh, I wonder what happened to me, I'm not deaf, yet I'm still socially awkward and people act strange around me...

Anyhow, I'd stick around and talk to ya, I'm not fluent, but I picked up some sign langauge at my previous job.

You're a great communicator every other way and hell, what's so hard about writing notes, reading lips or taking turns typing in Notepad on the Amiga.  :lol:

Seriously, communication today is a joke no matter who can fully hear or not. Despite the modern times with all these silly handheld devices and cell phones, most people only seem to hear what they want and the rest don't even know what to do with the info you've given them verbally anyway.

People freak out when they encounter a person with disabilities. My wife was born disabled (No forearms, half a leg, partial tongue) You wouldn't believe some of the stuff people say to her just because she makes them nervous.

A couple of local folks, nj_72, Speelgoedmannetje; met a few folks at an os4 presentation a long time ago, ofcourse the benelux amiga show thingy where Amiga.org magazine was presented where I met Kees, Ryu, Oli_hd and probably some other folks as well. Then there's the #amiganl people of which only rvo still frequents amiga.org I think.
