If you retired today what would you do with your Amigas?
« on: January 07, 2011, 12:36:19 AM »
Classic Amigas from Commodore that is like A500 and A1200 etc etc.

In the next 12-24 months I am going to stop working (not even 40 yet before you ask) for health reasons and because I worked bloody hard and my property assets are more than any pension would ever provide me.

Me? One thing I want to do is learn 68000 assembler properly and start trying to write demo quality code by hitting the hardware hard and seeing what cool bugs can be utilised :)

What would you do with all that spare time if you finished your last day of work this Friday?

Funny you should say that.  I have a few ex-coworkers who retired.  They say they don't get anything done and the reason is they put stuff off because they know they have plenty of time to do it tomorrow.

I always had this idea about creating a small, open-source application suite for classic systems (OS 3.1 and 2+ Mb RAM), with a small-footprint web browser, word processor and so on. Everything would be system-friendly and would run on a plain OS 3.1 install.

I never got around to it as I lack the time, skill, experience, and lately, motivation. Besides, the demand for stuff like this is minimal anyway.

Well as I stopped working due to ill health in 1999 I'm already there and still happily coding, creating GFX, and generally mucking around with my miggies each and every day... :)

Only thing that's changed a wee bit in recent months is I discovered the internet and now happily sit here bugging folk online with this old Mac while my miggie sits happily beside me doing all the good stuff... :)

PS:Happy retirement when it comes, I can heartily recommend it... :)

The same thing I'm trying to allocate more time to now: music and film art.  But it would also be very cool to be part of a team to produce new software for the classic Amiga.

I find as I get busier and busier with work I am a frustrated I don't get to do creative stuff as much as I would like (art, music, film, computer graphics).  While I am hoping I get a lot of creative work done in the twenty years BEFORE I am eligible to retire, but I am also hoping to enjoy all the free time after retirement to go crazy playing with all the retro hardware I currently don't have time to fully explore (should I live that long - lets hope)!  Maybe that's when I'll finally have time to play all the Infocom text adventures!  Boy, the classic stuff will really seem old then if I still have it!  I'm thinking that by then technology will be so far advanced there will be some perfect and cheap Amiga clone reproduction as well - heck maybe we will have some sort of replimat type or "physical printer" device where we can just materialize an Amiga clone from an open source design - just think about what has been accomplished in the past ten years in this regard....I remember in the 1990s we never thought that UAE would ever be useful, and things like FPGA clones were not even on my radar!

Digiman: although I'm sorry that your current health has forced you to retire before 40, I hope that you health now stays "on track" and lets you enjoy early retirement!  Think of all the great fun things you can do every day!

I would build all of my Amigas into a shrine and develop a cult.

Ya got two different questions here that ultimately have two different directions...

A. If you retired today what would you do with your Amigas?
B. What would you do with all that spare time if you finished your last day of work this Friday?

A. I'll be working to the day I die. I have no "nest egg" so to speak, just having gone through divorce, bankruptcy and mental anguish...
B. If my last day of work is to be this Friday, I would be spending the "spare" time looking for another job and listing my Amiga collection for sale. As it is anyway, I'm going to start going through the collection and hope to raise enough money for a major auto repair headed my way...

In a perfect world however, one where food, utilities and auto repairs don't cost anything, I'd imagine I would be...
WORKING!
Because a perfect world doesn't exist! :D

I would probably do nothing with the ones I have and go ahead and cobble together that elusive A4000 I've never gotten around to owning.

Hopefully the caps dont dry out in the meantime because I would hope to be way too busy pissing over the transom of a saltwater vessel in between pints of exotic beers.

Good point, let's assume your retirement/last day of work is due to having enough money to live off for the rest of your life reasonably comfortably :)

In that case... ;)
Work with the VT/Flyer system.
Re-learn Lightwave.
Sell off un-needed Amiga components.

Well, by the time I would really retire is about 33 years further :roflmao:
I guess I would hit email and ask someone to update all of my Amiga's with new caps and other repair works.

But I would still play games I guess, wouldn't do anything too complicated.
