G4 comp for morphos w/o system install media?
« on: November 27, 2010, 08:25:36 PM »
Lots of Morphos ready G4s on craigslist, but not with
os X install media. I thought you get os X media as part of the computer?

What is legal status of a 2nd hand owner,  are you entitled to os X
as part of the original retail sales agreement? Or must they backup the hardisk to an external drive? Is the PPC os X considered abandonware?

Please advise. And a :hammer: for Apple just because it feels good.

They would have originally shipped with an OEM copy of Mac OS X. You can still buy new retail copies of Leopard and previous versions from various sources. They support PowerPC and if applicable, Intel. Mac OS X continues to be copyrighted by Apple, regardless of the version or age.

Just a quick note: You don't need the Mac OS X media to install MorphOS if that's what you're wondering.

Of course having Mac OS X alongside is a nice bonus. Most of my macs are at least dual boot :)

Thanks for replying. I mainly don't like getting ripped off.
If it came with an installer, it should go with one.

http://forums.macrumors.com/archive/index.php/t-465507.html

These folks say an OEM install media 'should' come with the Mac, for
that model only, and that a retail version can be bought for use on the
Mac of your choice, but not including certain i-apps that are on the OEM media.
So I will make low offers on the ones without any install media. Morphos is still not
a household term here, but based on the lack of sales this week, I should get emacs at $30-$50, MDD models between $70 and $120 if media is included, mini at $120 with media, and many types Quicksilvers between $40-$100.

Macbooks average asking is $250, but sell like moss covered lawn ornaments. Too many fast multi-core laptops with prices scraping the margins at the bigbox stores. And Apple owners deeply entrenched in 'technology-moved-on' denial.
Cheers

Forgot about the iLife stuff, and yes, the licenses were transferred with the system, even if the media wasn't. You can always call Apple or an Apple reseller and ask for replacement media.

OSX sucks, but I'm posting this on a Powermac with MorphOS and an accelerator card and it runs pretty good.
Considering the poster you were responding to had a SAM @733MHz my 1800Mhz  7447 processor run circles around that.

For me personally, the SAM would be useless.
Likewise, a G4 mac would be just as useless for me.

Anything that doesn't let me watch video online is useless.

Because the install disks were likely Jaguar (or even Puma) whilst the last system they were running was likely Tiger or Leopard.  So the install disks often get filed in a Rectangular container which is hauled away by a friendly man in a truck....

That means that the faster G4s (around 800MHz and up) are not useless for you then. MorphOS OWB plays video online just fine.

Of course I did. Run smoothly on my 500 MHz PowerMac.
