I just ran a couple of tests here.

G4 1.25GHz playing YouTube in Safari: slideshow, unwatchable
G4 1.25GHz playing the same FLV file (downloaded from YouTube) in VLC: perfect FMV

Now the one that surprised me, same results on my G4 700MHz.

Technically, it's not "watching videos online" at that point, and adds a bit of work if you want to watch YouTube, but the hardware can handle the video.

I assume OWB uses a similar method to play YouTube?

Simple. When I enter YouTube and select a movie, the script included in OWB adds view (and download) options below the inactive Flash object. Then I select viewing, Flash object gets replaced with internal player. Then it just play the movie. If a movie is available as HTML 5, I can play it directly (I've entered the YouTube HTML 5 betatest page, so I'm always offerred a HTML 5 version if available).

I installed OWB, installed the flash plugin from http://fabportnawak.free.fr/owb/plugins/, enabled the HTML5 mode (http://www.youtube.com/html5) and then installed http://fabportnawak.free.fr/owb/scripts/YouTube.js and http://fabportnawak.free.fr/owb/scripts/YouTube_Fullscreen_Fix.js following the instructions in the OWB readme.

It's also possible to leave out the flash plugin completely and only use html5.

Sounds better than the method I used on OSX.

@ Tension

The only way to watch a YouTube video properly on my iMacG4 @ 800Mhz is to let the whole thing download and then watch it, if you try to watch it online/live it's nothing more than a slide show (although the audio plays fine either way). I did at first think this was down to my broadband speed, as you can watch DVDs/Videos no problems offline, but this proved not to be the case as the iMacG5 @2.1Ghz I just got plays video online without problems at the same broadband speed.

I think myself it could be mainly down to MAC OS X being so processor intensive...  :(

I assume this thing called OWB is something to do with MorphOs and not MAC OS X ?

Seriously?  I didn't think Amigas could play flash videos.  How come I didn't know about this?  This is good news. :)

What is the quality like?
Can the same process also be used to watch BBC iPlayer / 4od as well?

I cant watch YouTube/iPlayer/4od or any of those flash-based sites on a G4 mac mini 1.42 Ghz.

I recommended the system to a friend who wanted a small computer to watch TV on.  I thought the mini would be perfect.

How wrong I was.

Never, never again.

Cool.

If more people knew that Amigas can actually be used on YouTube, then more people would be inclined to buy one.

I have stated many, many times on here that the main reason I wouldn't buy an OS4+ machine is because of lack of Flash support.  I hate flash, but the sad fact is that we do need it still.

I now may be able to actually consider buying a SAM now...

MorphOS is currently the only amigoid OS that can do it.

As Piru allready pointed out, this only works with MorphOS and the included version of OWB.

Even if the OS4 version would get updated to this point (which it won't) it's rather doubtfull wether the slow 440-SOC based SAMs could handle this.
1. Make an announcment.
2. Wait a while.
3. Check if it can actually be done.
4. Wait for someone else to do it.
5. Start working on it while giving out hillarious progress-reports.
6. Deny that you have ever announced it
7. Blame someone else

The quality is only limited by quality of the movie. But, as Piru mentioned, it works only on MorphOS.

It is a shame.

Still good that MorphOS is better than Safari for YouTube though.
