A600 MOBO in a A500 Case
« on: October 21, 2010, 10:18:31 PM »
A600HD in a A500 Cabinet

I had an A500 rev5 already limped slightly with yellow, green and red boot screens once in a while.

I pulled the motherboard out and put an A600 motherboard i had in spare, with a Kick 2.05 rev. 37,350 in.

Customized the expansion trap door a little so I could use the PCMCIA slot, and put a CF card reader on the back, and also put the joy stick ports on the back where i think they belonged.

I kept the A500 disk drive, but put a green LED on that indicates when the drive is active, although i can not fail to hear it;)

Then I made a hardware hack I found online for A500 keyboard to A600 MOBO, so it could run on the motherboard.

It worked, also the Reset (Ctrl+A+A) keys and the numeric keypad works.

'Power' and 'Drive' LEDs is connected to the motherboard, so the 'Drive' flashes when ide port running.

So it all ended up with an alternative solution with A500/A600 HD.

I put an A4000 motherboard into an A500 once.  It was too ugly for pictures.

Nice roomy cases, though, the A500s have.
3 Commodore file cabinets, 2 Commodore USB turntables, 1 AmigaWorld beer mug
Alienware M14x i7 laptop running AmigaForever

Hmmm... I agree, It's a well done hack but... I don't see the point on that kind of hacks...

Whatching this gallery is clear (at least imho) a mini pc mounted on the a600 case (very nice hack) and the a600 motherboard on the a500 spare case.

Yeah..
I Know.

I still have 2 fully functinal A600 in its original, and 1 mobo from the mini pc hack,
but i think it has a memory problem, since it sometimes boots up with green screen, so
i chopped up a ugly a600 that i got for free, because the previous owner gave it a nasty satin black paint job.

in my world Amiga is beige.

Cheers SD-H

@ SaMiga
A nice idea and a great piece of work... :)

@ ferix
The point is, to be creative and make use of what limited hardware is available to us Amiga users and have fun & enjoy doing it... :)

It was fun, and somehow keeping things alive with alternative solutions is also fun.

- It's a nice way to get a full keyboard on an A600.
- It's a cheap way to get IDE+PCMCIA on an A500.

Ok, let me explain myself...
From my personal point of view, this is like trying to fit an enzo  ferrari chassis into a testarossa body... both are very good cars, why  to ruin them?
I understand you would want to put a better (even) turbo on them, or to  change the wheels... or simply pimp them up... but not to turn them into  a  mess...
Do you see my point?
But, if It's funny for you, It's ok for me ;)

What I really hate are modern computers into retro ones, like a peecee  mobo into an amiga case (I know there are some) or into a zx spectrum or  C64...
God!!! Keep It retro!!! :P

As for me, I'll try to keep pimping up my amigas :P

You're just not going to like my Dual CPU Pentium III transplanted into a Commodore PET Model 4016 case are you? I lovingly call it my PETium; where retro meets vintage.

@xPhilx

Sure I won't... but I'll take a look at the pictures ;)

As I said, I admit there are good hacks, even when I don't like them.
