It's a shame Commodore didn't grab this new goose laying golden eggs with both hands and make Amiga a nice out of the box internet solution. But then maybe like the Dreamcast it was just too early for it's time to work.

On the contrary, the Amiga whilst Commodore was alive had a perfectly serviceable suite of tools to go "online".

The trouble was there was only really BBS's available. The internet didn't really feature outside of honking great universities. The World Wide Web really only started to catch on after death of Commodore.

1994 if I remember correctly...
~Got an email address.
~Compuserve. They insisted that "an Amiga computer could not be set up to work with the service."
~IRC. ...sound samples and and general antisocial socialisim.

Learned IRC and joined the Channel AmigaCafe which if I recall correctly was on Undernet.
It's been YEARS!! 1994 or 1995 I think?

Damn...  sounds familiar.

first online service I had access to was Prodigy, via a 386sx with 2400bps modem. I'm not sure if their service even had connectivity with the wider internet at that time. But I was 11, so naturally the first thing I did was troll their helpline with a question about where babies come from.

I remember The Dump, they had Genesis roms for a while but were taken down after a complaint from some industry association.

I had one of those internet directory magazines, naturally I flipped straight to the porn section.
I can't believe you use to be able to surf the web in only 8 Megabytes.

You could do with less than 8 Megs as well. I dont remember how much memory I had in it, but after hours of setup strugle I got my A500 on the net.  It was upgraded to kickstart 2 and had a harddrive. AmiTCP, ALynx and Amosaic, dont remember the dialing program. I think I also did softkick it to 3.0 at some point to run OS3 for getting more modern browsers to run. And the 14.4k modem was quite fast at the time:)
Spent lots of time at newsgroups at the time.

I'd been trying to recall recently when I first got on the net...must have been 1996. I remember buying a 28.8 modem from my local Amiga shop in Brierley hill (the west mids of england - I grew up in the UK before moving to aus). The shop owner also gave my a copy of NCOMM ;-) and I was hooked on BBS's for a few months until I pursuaded my Dad to sign us up to Cable internets dial up service. My first email address was with net @address...remember those guys?? and I used webcrawler as a search engine - they were pretty big back in the day. Back in 1996 my stock Amiga 1200 with 6mb was pretty good at surfing the web and I dont recall there being many sites it couldnt handle. I finally bought a PC in about late 1997.

I used my A1200 and a 2400 baud modem to connect to the internet threw a local university. They were using something call "PINE", I can't remember what program I was using to connect but it was text only. I went to a lot of Newsgroups at the time.

That's exactly the way I did it at my (Canadian) university as well.  You used a Terminal program to log into the university's VAX mainframe, and there was something called PINE, and you searched the internet by navigating through GOPHER sites.  No WWW yet.

This was all text-based.  No graphics.

BTTPoint: Gopher and FTP via a gateway on a BBS, probably '93-'94.  It was a long winded way to get files but it worked. 9600 Modem. (Madness)

I was in the university library and looked at pictures of naked women in something called Gopher which was sort of an early www.  They were 256-colour GIFs and each one took a few minutes to download.

I remember thinking at the time 'I bet you could make money by charging people to look at these photos'...

Hi, what did you get up to the when you got connected to the internet?

I got immediately disconnected and then reconnected after a half hour of retries.

The second thing i did was go on a BBS.

The third thing was to order a faster computer.

... and then a faster modem.

Here's a thought: Was the CD32 the first pure games console you could "play online"  (with 2 modems over dial-up, or with a games server as well in theory)

Waaaaaay too far ahead of its time!!
