There wasn't really a worldwide web when I first used the internet, just lots of MUDs :)

Gee thats a long time ago.  Well after a few years using my Amiga to access local bbs boards that I racked up enormous phone bills on (!) I purchased Miami and downloaded AMosiac and the later iBrowse.  This was in 1993 on my souped-up A1200.  But as for what I first did... hmm probably create my own home page.

Ps. Wasn't there a search engine back in them days that was maintained solely on the Amigas?  I am sure it was around for many years, it wasn't just searching Amiga sites it searched the whole internet just like Google and Yahoo do.  Can't remember its name. :S

There was The Amiga Web Directory maintained by CUCUG. In fact, that was one of the first sites I went to back in 1996. I have memories of finding Amiga.org via that site too on my A1200. A lot of my usage on the net at that time was newsgroups and email (circa 96-99)

Okay, since we're not talking about the BBS period in the 1980s, I'll skip that....

First time on the Internet was through a University account.  I used Gopher a lot (as this was pre-WWW).   I would dial into the University's VAX with my Amiga500 using JrTerm and a 2400 baud Supra modem (no, not 28K, 2400 - but I started on a 300 baud modem in the 1980s).

One of the first things I did was e-mail a guy in Washington for some reason (I live in central Canada).  He replied while I was still in that particular session and I couldn't believe that I had gotten a written reply from across the continent almost immediately.

I remember reading the rumour - and then the confirmation - of the Commodore bankruptcy on the Usenet with this machine!
Music I've made using Amigas and other retro-instruments: http://theovoids.bandcamp.com

We didn't ever have internet on the A1200 (It didn't even have a HD...) and eventually got a PC where we got dialup. Think that was around 1998/99.

Also, I always wondered, what did Amiga.org look like in 1994?
Machines:
- A1200, Blizzard 1260 w/ 64MB RAM, 1.2GB HD, PCMCIA WiFi, AGA w/ RGB Adapter, OS3.9
- Pegasos I, G3 600Mhz, 512MB, Radeon 9200se, 80GB HD, AmigaKit WiFi Card, MOS 1.4.5
- Mac Mini, G4 1.5ghz, 512MB (1GB Soon), Radeon 9200 64MB, 80GB HD, OSX 10.5 (Leopard)
- PCs, Laptops... *yawn*... :D

First thing I did was emailing a few of my friends that I was online.
I think it was 1999 for the first time on my own pc.

But a friends place I was already online in 1996, he had ISDN and later even manged to use 2 lines, making it 128K.

No the first thing I did, but I did look at a few things, but then it always was fake.
Video's nowadays, intresting to see some things, but again not my primary need for the net.
I think if someone is constantly lookin' for porn, you seriously need to get a life and a girlfriend

Cool!

So when did Amiga.org become the forums like they are now?

(Did A.org use any forum software before the *previous* forum software? (The one before we moved to this one - XOOPS?))

Got to be honest I think my first search was for "boobs"... I was a naive youngster ;-)

I had a Atari 1200 my first computer and I would use telenet to dial in to compuserve. I lived in Ft Irwin Calif, a Army base in the middle of the desert. I had to dial in to palm springs long distance, and at 300 buld you had to browse quick, I remember going to download a picture of the statule of liberty that was in compute mag. I had tried to type it all in, and never worked, so I founds the file on there servers and was on top of the world, that was my cherry on the net. I tell people I was on the internet before the internet was cool. I got my first A1000 in Germany and didn't have much luck finding any thing to do on the net, but we would go to the main train station in Frankfurt and buy the Fred Fish disks and PD stuff, so the net didn't become inprotant till I returned to the states.

This gives you a little insight about the origins of A.org

Hi, what did you get up to the when you got connected to the internet?

I went to some Amiga sites including aminet, Yahoo, a couple of university websites and some companies (only intro pages at that time).

I used my A1200 and a 2400 baud modem to connect to the internet threw a local university. They were using something call "PINE", I can't remember what program I was using to connect but it was text only. I went to a lot of Newsgroups at the time.

If QLink doesn't count, it was at a friends house and I went on EBay to look around and was blown away by all of the C64 & C128 things for sale.

BBS stories are great, but I meant when you called the phone company (or whatever) and signed up for an internet service.

The internet "developed", it didn't start on any particular day......I signed up with compuserve in around 89/90 and then soon after the www began. Before that we had Gopher, FTP, POP, smtp, Slip, PPP, UseNet etc. The first website I went to was NetScape's home page....exciting !

But.....this wasn't new, just different !

Fidonet was around in the 80's and I spent a lot of time, jumping from POP to POP, Telnet / Kermit was the internet way before Mr Berners Lee layed claim to the World Wide Web. Hoping across to look at content in the states from the UK was quite a regular thing before the "Internet" had even made the news.
