Photogenics 2.x was a complete rewrite and is a lot better than 1.2.

2.x was alot faster but it seemed to crash more often, the skinned interface caused problems maybe?

Website states $79.. I think it might be worth it.. I've always wanted this program.

which website?

I used version 5 ( I think, there were so many incremental updates once it hit version 4.  And there had to be it was extremely buggy).

I liked the way this software worked: spray on any color over the region you want, change the mode to any effect you want eg blur, sharpen,, black and white, etc, and the painted region is replaced with the effect and becomes a layer siting over the original image.  You can then alter the transparency, the edge blending of the effect layer with the underlying image, and finally merge it with the original image by "fixing" it.  Masks? bah, just spray and fix!  Even better, if you wanted to spray paint directly with the effect, you could, so more and more of the effect came out the longer you sprayed on the same region, in real time.

I'd seen similar things with PC software, but even on  an Athlon x2, the 68060/ CV64 combo with photogenics was faster to spray the effect on in real time, and kept up as you moved your pointer so you got smooth curves rather than interpolated straight lines as you painted. I never did use the PC version, but I read a review at the time that said Adobe and Metacreations should be ashamed of just how slower they were than photogenics.

It annoys me that the (much newer) Windows version, which was $699 for so long, is now down to $79 (or A$99.60 according to the website here) yet the Amiga version is still full price. It's a digital download, that means they don't lose anything when they sell, it's 100% profit. No packaging, no postage, no CD needs to be burned, they haven't spent a cent publishing or marketing the product for over ten years and it's still too expensive to afford. So, if they get one guy with enough cash buying their product this year, they make $79 total. But if it was $30, a few of us would have already bought it, making them more profit than they'd make selling one single overpriced copy. Stupid prices like this just make software so much more tempting to download a pirated copy of.

Hey Gulliver

Can you convince these guys to release Photogenics into open source?  Grin.

Seriously, I don't use graphics enough to justify $79 either.  I would move quickly for a $30 price

If they can make the same money selling it at more than 2X the $33 price then they will.

$79 for an unsupported program is a bit steep, especially with no paper manual or program media. At the time of it's release, this was an awesome bargain. Got my 4.1 copy in 1999 at AmiWest. Our computer club did demos and sold copies for Paul Noland during the event and club members got special pricing. :)  Matter of fact, I still have the sales book from our club with names and serial numbers of the copies we sold at the event.

Photogenics HDR
hmmm... Show the link to the HDR version for $79 and I'll purchase this product for my PC. I can only find it on the Idruna site for $399. And any mention or support of the Amiga version is no where to be found. This is a link I saved a few years ago for the Amiga version.

Maybe if there are a few of ya'll wanting to get the program but are hesitant at the $79 price, get together and make an offer to buy a number of copies at a reduced cost. Couldn't hurt to try, and if there is enough intrest from Amigas, [strike]they[/strike] Paul might offer it up at a discounted price.

Hey Cammy. I remember Art Effect. I played with a demo. For $30 it's a steal. You get Adobe Photoshop Version 5-6 functionality on the Amiga.

Photogenics has cooler natural media and VFX painting styles,
But Art Effect is a Photoshop Clone for the Amiga.
