I ordered a SamFlex system yesterday
« on: May 14, 2010, 07:14:01 PM »
...with 1GB of memory from AmigaKit. Planning to run Blender on it, among other things. That's even though I have a half-dozen other computers with other operating systems that will all run Blender just fine and no doubt faster. :-)

Got excited about the X1000 until I saw the price. Not gonna be able to do that, sorry to say.

I didn't know the price for the X1000 had been announced. What is the price?

Unfortunately the X1000 will cost over 1700 euro. At this point I am waiting for Sam460!

$2k+ for a hobby computer. No thanks. What are these people smoking? Who pays that much today for a fully loaded computer with a relevant OS even? Guess I'll just move ahead with my plans to get a 27" Intel based iMac for that kind of money.

We should have known better. Remember the announcement that purported that the X1000 was going to cost less than the original Amiga 1000 when it first rolled out? Someone conjectured that there was going to be a translation to modern currency with inflation figured in. Looks like they were right  ;)

That price is just nuts. Like 2600 said, how many people actually spend that sort of money on a machine these days? Even the high end machines from Apple will only account for a tiny percentage of computer sales and they are an established company. Looks like this will just push OS4.1 customers Acube's way.

@mbrantley

welcome to the club:)  I'm sure you'll be surprised how snappy Blender runs on the Samflex but of course you'll have to go get a coffee during very large rendering..which always reminds me of waiting forever to render with my 1200 and Lightwave back in the day but I never cared because it's the responsiveness of the program while working that matters to me;)
Don't forget to check out glUAE to run  your old apps and especially to play ECS/OCS and most AGA games! RunInUAE is also a good program for 68k stuff but it's not that good for AGA stuff..then of course there are hundreds of goodies at os4depot to keep you smiling...enjoy!

btw, I would stick to update 1 for now because some people (me included) are experiencing some USB flaws under Update 2

It does and can, but a lot of people still know what it means here when you use it contextually.

Thanks for this -- good info here. I've ordered the complete kit with Update 2 preinstalled, so I may have to experience any USB flaws firsthand.

While I wait for my new computer, I'm deciding which monitor to use with it. I have a couple of candidates in the house, but the best I can shake loose from other duties is a Samsung B2330. Native resolution is is 1920 x 1080, I think. Will the included Radeon 9250 graphics card with 128MB produce that OK? Nothing I hate worse than using a non-native resolution on a LCD monitor.

I didn't mean to imply that a specific X1000 price has been announced, but the Trevor Dickinson interview posted under the news section seems to indicate it will be more than I can pay. Not saying anything about whether it's worth it, only that I can't pay it.

Wow! What a machine I could build with a $2100 shopping spree on Newegg.com! LOL!

You could build an 8 core (dual 4core procs) ,16GB RAM, etc monster that could run Windoze, Linux, Hackintosh, and about any other app you could think of!
