Amiga 2024 monitor
« on: November 23, 2003, 04:55:46 AM »
Does anybody out there actually HAVE the A2024 monitor?
I farted around with one in an Amiga shop eowns ago, nice (4 col.) pic
And, just like EVERYBODY else (c'mon admit it!!) I choose the A2024 monitor in prefs/screenmodes, just to see! Took a while to get the mouse on the right plane to get out!!

Just curious!! :-?

Yeah, I tried screenmodes my old PAL monitor couldnt cope with for a a laugh too.

I found simply giving it the 3 finger salute was easier than trying to work out which of the array of mouse pointers I could see was the actual one :-D

WHAT!?
Sounds like you cheated and hit USE instead of the braver SAVE button on the SCREENMODE window!!!
Cheater.............
Good thing I tried it on a mil-spec industrial Amiga Professional computer!!!
A lesser machine, like an A500, probibly couldn't handle it!!

I was really just looking for memories/reflections, etc. of the A2024 monitor! It had (if I remember correctly) 800X600 resolution and a rock solid picture.
anyone have one and still use it?
for sale or trade?

Hmm. 800x600. That for OCS? Under ECS it could do up to 1024x1024 (in 4 shades) I think.

I have seen one running way back when. Haven't seen another since.

As it goes the picture wasn't bad but the refresh rate was still low. It worked by having a high persistance phosphor so you couldn't tell.
However that had the drawbacks of leaving a slight trail when anything moved (like old LCD screens but not anywhere near as bad).

really??
I know about the slow phospher screen. If memory serves correct, it could only refresh at 10-15Khz!
It was also notorously slow while dragging screens down, playing CDXL or any other processor intensive tasks!
It does have advantages though- I have my CD32 hooked up to a PSONE monitor and it has no flicker whatsoever!

Weird, but I have an older A2000 (Mil-spec no less!) with an '040 in it that would probibly scream on that monitor. All I use it for is Lightrave (and Lightwave 3D), word processing, and my tax info.

It wouldn't push it to bad.

They were good, weird BIG monitors!!!

No kidding :-) For OCS I think the A2024 modes use much of the available chip ram bandwidth which is what causes the slow down. Similar to using the DBLPAL/DBLNTSC modes in 256 colour on the AGA chipset.

Well even if you did select save, you'd just reboot with no startup and go to the env-archive and delete screenmode.prefs.. :-)

Nearly always there's an easy way with AmigaOS ;-)

@Karlos

You didn't read that Atari-thread did you ? ;-)

The A2024 will do 1024x1008@50Hz on PAL-Amigas and 1024x800@60Hz
on NTSC-Amigas. A bug in the driver reduced that to 1008x .... (not sure
wether that was fixed sometimes), and in theory it would run on any
Amiga with 1Mb and atleast Kick1.3 (needed a special Jumpstart_1.4 WB
for that). Now actually useing it with less than 3Mb wasn't a really smart
idea, but it worked. It did not use the SuperHighRes-based resolution
of the ECS-Denise, but some mega-interlaced HighRes.
(the 2024 also worked as a FF for normal interlaced modes).

@MaDDuck
Offcourse it were 4 greyscales, not colors, atleast until you did that Aminet-hack
that connected the A2024's logic-board to a normal VGA-monitor (57kHz oe more).
1. Make an announcment.
2. Wait a while.
3. Check if it can actually be done.
4. Wait for someone else to do it.
5. Start working on it while giving out hillarious progress-reports.
6. Deny that you have ever announced it
7. Blame someone else

@Karlos

No, the Amiga just gave a normal 640x200(256) signal in 2 bit, the plane-pointers
were switched on every pic, resulting in every frame taking up to 0.1 secs to
be build. Chipmem use was also high, but not the bandwidth used.

Which Atari thread might that be?
Is there a thread out here about Atari's big-ass monochrome monitor? I can't remember the model number.....

BTW.....
Here's the ONLY photo I could find of one:
http://www.amiga-hardware.com/a2024.html
It also explaines quite a bit about the monitor.

Yeah- I want one!  :-)
