What I don't know how to do is if I have the HD with 2 partitions and I get os3.9 installed, how do I change the partitions without loosing all the installed programs?
(I know it's a software post, but it was started as a possible hardware problem)

31,029 * 1,008 * 512 = 16,013,942,784 Bytes

Looks ok to me. You know, HDtoolbox cannot display anything above 2GB correctly, hence the negative number. Nothing to worry about.

Thank you Thomas. And how do I do to make the partitions again when I will have the 3.9 installed, making them over it? I mean, if I make the partitions I loose all the information. How can I put it again?
Perhaps making a copy in the Pcmcia and fulling them again?
Or there is a way to add 3 partitions and let the ones installed as they are?

Partitions which you don't touch will remain valid. Only changed partitions need to be formatted.

If you want to change the size of a partition without loosing files, you have to backup all data, change the size, format and then copy back the backup. You can use any backup medium you like which has enough space. Another CF card in the PCMCIA slot is fine.

I don't understand what happens. I've already made only two partitions:
DH0, System, bootable, with 401Mb, and
DH1, Apps, with 2207 Mb,
installed AmigaSys 4 Aga, the cd rom and have installed again OS3.9. It finishes installation and after that... nothing! No boot... What I'm doing wrong?

Swtich off the Amiga, then hold down both mouse buttons and switch it on again. In the early startup menu click on "boot without startup-sequence". Now enter

cd devs
rename "amigaos rom update" "amigaos rom update.disabled"

wait a few seconds until disk activity is finished, then reboot.

Sorry, I have no idea of AmigaDos. After the startup without startup-sequence I get to AmigaDos.
I've written both commands exactly as you said and it doesn't boot.
I've done it right because if I make it again it says :
Can't rename amigaos rom update as amigaos rom update.disabled because object not found

and have installed again OS3.9.

The AmigaOS ROM Update is a part of OS 3.9. If you installed 3.9 correctly, then the file should be in the Devs directory.

BTW, is AmigaSys supposed to be updated by OS 3.9 at all?  Most of those all-in-one packages are so badly changed compared to original AmigaOS that OS updates don't work any more.

I'm going to try to install 3.1, cd and 3.9 alone to see how it goes. I can reinstall ASys later.

It's done and doesn't boot. Used the commands again and nothing...
It has to be a problem with the partitions, or what?

I've been reading and it seems I have to use the Smart File System archive to manage the HD...?

It sounds to me, when you created the partitions, that you did not tick the box that says "bootable".

[/] Bootable
A4000D - CSMKII//128MB/IDE CF/Indivision Scandoubler
A1200
A1000

(And now a Minimig) :>)

Hi, I'm back here.
Yes I did and if I open it with the Install disk I can see with HDtools it's marked bootable.

I read this somewhere:
"Fixed it
I have my 60 giga harddrive running on the 1200..
used a 2.5. > 3.5 convertor and formated the hd on Amigaforever on the pc.
Then a installed Os3.9 from cd on the A1200.
Runs like a charm now At last...
I have now 3 partitions dh0: FFS 1giga, DH1: SFS 1giga and DH2: SFS 53,9 giga"

I'm going to try now, although have no idea

I coudn't with Amiga Forever (I believe he was meaning WinUAE, but I don't know how).
I've tried too with the SFS system. I made two partitions with less than 4gb with the ordinary system, and another 3 ones with 4GB each with SFS system. When I get to install 3.1 I only see the first two ones.
After booting I get problems: first there was no hd, and after a reboot it was again, and it booted with a wrong screen saying I had 0kb free in the system one... I was trying to make a copy of the content to format it and full it again, but the system crashed again. If I start the Amiga with the Install disk and go to HDtools, doesn't appear any HD...

I believe I would need some good advice...:rtfm:

I'm trying another way: I've tried making three partitions with less than 4 gb all together with the WB 3.1 install disk: DH0 400mb, DH1 1GB and DH2 2GB, and made an Emergency Disk for os3.9 with the other HD.
The thing is when I start it and try to open DH0 it crashes.
With the Emergency Disk I have access to the CD, but if I try to install 3.9 over the Hd it fails when I select where (DH0).

If I open the HDtools of the 3.9 Emergency Disk, there are 3 things:
atapi.device
cardisk.device
scsi.device

If I select cardisk the only button it lets me use is EXIT.
How can I do it, please?

When will you learn that carddisk.device cannot be used for harddrives?
