Hello There from the UK....
« on: April 07, 2010, 03:04:53 PM »
Hi all, well after seeing some youtube clips of old amiga games I thought it was about time to get my old amiga out of the loft and see if she still worked!

Well once I found all the cables keyboard, mouse and monitor plugged it all in and switched on just the got the power light flashing oh no its not dead! I started to strip it a part all cards out memory simms then 1/2 can of computer solvent cleaner on all the connectors and plugs she powered up and booted workbench off the hard drive.

Result my old A4000/040 warp engine and Picasso IV is back in the land of the living lol not bad as its been well over 10 years since it was last in use. So I have a lot of catching up to do by the look off it hopefully it will all come back quickly.

Cheers

Just a quickie to say I would get the battery off as quickly as possible before you lose the Amiga all together.

Can you run without the battery?

Yes you can! Tho clock and date has to be set everytime you start your amiga (if you want/care) and all files edited/created will allways have the same annoying date :)

But other then that it will work just fine :D

My 4000 has been running without a battery for ages - it just runs FACTS (http://www.unsatisfactorysoftware.co.uk/index.php?pg=facts) when it connects to the net!

Get that battery out ASAP though! It'll kill your motherboard!

If your Amiga has an internet connection you can set the time using the program Facts which will set the time for you.

That green "fur" will eat into the motherboard and surrounding components.

Cut the old battery off and clean the surrounding area well.

No problem really.. In fact I have my A4000 on the internet so every time I fire her up I connect to the atomic clock and it auto updates the time anyway.

I always remove batteries from Amigas now. It is just too risky. You will lose the mouse otherwise and then the motherboard will fall apart. It runs down underneath and causes even worse probs you cant see. Very sad...

Here is an A4000 I rescued

http://www.commodore-amiga-retro.com/amiga/amiga_scuzz201.htm

I generally just rock the battery back and forth till it snaps off.. Ever so gently... Here is the more professional way...

http://www.tekniikka.oamk.fi/~archy/a4kbattery/

Better to remove the battery than lose a valuable computer...
