I thought that AmigaOS was a lean, mean OS that didn't need the vast amounts of RAM needed by other, inferior products? If that's still the case, why are they selling it with 512 meg of RAM when it should be literally flying with 64?

I have 512MB in my Pegasos. I had been away from Amiga for a while and was kind of used to the PC situation when I ordered it, and I must say it is a real overkill with that much memory in an Amiga envireonment. But at least you will have a huge RAM: drive!  :-D

Why they are selling it? I think it has something to do with availability really. I don't think there are any 64MB or 128MB modules available that works with the Articia. Perhaps a few 256MB's, but I believe it is much easier to get ahold of the 512MB's.

Is that kingston ?
No, made by Samsung and runs at pc133 (backwards compatable), my mate uses the ram in his A1G3-SE and not had any problems, time will tell when OS4 comes out,

I am using a 512MB registered Samsung PC133 ECC in my Pegasos. Works fine! And it's the same Articia, so ...

@Troels_E

 Good question!!! I actually think the G3 will be the fastest in some cases. When the G4 cache(256K) has been filled, and the G4 needs to page the slow SD-Ram, things will definitely slow down. The G3(512K) will still be running at full speed, with no wait-states because it's still adressing within the cache mem.
 The whole RAM interface on the A1, is a bit of a mystery so far, until further hardware details emerges from Eyetech.
 The RAM interface is my only complaint regarding the A1 hardware design. The use of registered RAM is expensive and slow, and it shouldn't be nescesary on a desktop. The register part of the RAM steals 1 clockcycle, and depending on the BIOS latency setup, the access will be slowed with at least 2 clockcycles, when set to lantency 2(CL2). If things are really bad, latency 3(CL3) will be used, so the register and CL3 will produce 4 wait-states... :-(

@Helgis75:

Yes, AFAIK the G3 is faster than the G4 at the same clock frequency. But the G4 is available in higher clock frequencies. And if the G4's Altivitec is being used it may boost performance even more for some applications.

I'd advise anyone who's getting an A1 (or Pegasos): buy your DIMMs with the board!

Articia's compatibility is crap, even down to brand and the CL making a difference. If you buy DIMMs in advance, even if you think they should be ok, you could end up sending them back.

@KennyR

 Good idea to get the RAM from Eyetech! The RAM interface design on the Articia chipset, seems to be very critical(crappy...???).
 But if you purchase RAM from another dealer, make sure that YOU GET THE CL2 type RAM, Not CL3!!!
 The latency/registered RAM issue, indicates an unstable SD-RAM interface, only saved by the fact, that it's needs all types of hardware tricks to function properly.

Take a look at Crucial's RAM link.SDRAM 133

The CT16M72S4R7E/ CT32M72S4R7E/ CT64M72S4D7E RAM's and only these types should work, but I could be mistaken.

I would agree about getting the ram with the board if it was not an Amiga shop but it is an Amiga shop so you will pay top dollar for everything, 10 quid for a fan says it all.

Team

I must be getting old or something... :crazy:

I cannot remember the original prices, so is this a cost saving on the MB and how much for each option???

The OS will be lean...most modern os's are worked on by hundreds of programmers...one good thing about having such a small team, is they just don't have enough time to write services that could later be called bloat.

But, as someone mentioned before, it doesn't matter how efficient the OS is, if you are working with photo-editing software, some of the effects and things, applied to hi-res, hi-color images with multiple layers, are going to take a lot of memory, then when you want to keep all your images in memory at the same time...it will start to add up.

---------------------------------------------------------------
in response to the rest of the thread:

Expensive RAM now?  this is making the build your own mac look like a better option:

Here is a machine I am considering building
Mac 'gigabit ethernet' 2xAGP logic board - 150
Giga Designs G4 800 mhz ZIF - 300
ATX case with Mac 22 pin p/s - 110
Standard PC100 memory 512mb - 90

That's $650 to get that far....that Mac p/s is an unfortunate inefficiency, and if I can get directions to convert a standard atx p/s, all the better....but its ability to take standard memory, now appears to help it in comparison to the amigaONE.

Of course, it doesn't run OS 4, unless the unverified rumor of a cyberstorm emulator turns out to tbe true, and it only may run morphOS...in a worst case scenario, its as much an amiga as any UAE box...(kind of like the AmigaONE today)

but, I just like reviewing all the options....its hard to get any Amiga, pegasos, or otherwise as cheap as a do-it-yourself Mac...and these parts are NEW, and while the gigabit ethernet board is circa 2001 with its 2xAGP and PC100 memory...as it happens you won't find the AmigaONE to be any faster with its 2xAGP and server memory.

I'm not adding the cost of a mac graphics card into the equation since many pc graphics cards can be reflashed to be mac compatible...so its just a matter of buying a cheap pc card and reflashing it, I'm not worried about support on a frankenmac...

aiyeeee...I am really close to buying *something* now...in a way its so exciting not having a clue what I'll buy in the end...one day it will just be 'time' and something will get ordered  :-D  :-D

How about using those huge memory resources for RAD: drive. Just copy OS to it and it should be fast to do warm reboot.

Especially if some programs behave badly.  :-)

Just saw the updates at Eyetechs' AmigaOne-pricing list, and yes, the A1G3XE has got a speed-increase to 800Mhz!!! Pretty stuffs! If i am right, then we're talking about a 200Mhz speed gap between all the three models...! So the spesifications should be:

AmigaOne G3-SE: 600Mhz (soldered)
AmigaOne G3-XE: 800Mhz (upgradable)
AmigaOne G4-XE: 1.2Ghz!!! (upgradable)

I think these will be the spesifications of the models being updated, and being part of the delay

I have ordered the top-of-the-line-system! I have been waiting for this revenge over the Amiga-hatred PC-fanaticans...Now it's time to kick some butts!!!

Where did you get the 1.2Ghz G4 information from ?????

A1G3XE at 800Mhz!!!
« Reply #25 on: January 22, 2003, 10:33:28 AM »
Well, there is actually no 1.2Ghz G4-information yet at Eyetech. That was just something i believed could happen, when the A1G3XE now has been updated to 800Mhz from the previous 700Mhz...

This may cause confusions to what version of the XE to choose from...If the A1G4XE will be delivered at 1.2Ghz speed, then my choice is clear for this one, but if the speed will still be 800Mhz, then i will go for the 800Mhz A1G3XE-model. It remain to be seen, but i actually paid for the top-of-the-line model, so i have the advance of making the best choice of the XE, whatever it turns out to be at the end...

I already made this clear. Just a thought of the G4, but the A1G3XE is clear...I repeat: READ BETWEEN THE LINES, then you will finally understand...

Me Too !!

I went for the Radeon 7000 on that list as well.
Not forgetting the Engraved Amiga Faceplate ! :-D

Yippee !!
 :-D  :-D  :-D

When 800MHz gets too slow :-o, and I can afford it ;-) I will get that Dual G4 board. probably next year - y'never know - PPC may be up to a coupla GHz then !!

@Helgis75,

Yeah, I thought about the 750FX Card instead,
but I'm a sucker for features, and now that Altivec streams are going to be supported (to an extent) in OS4, I couldnt resist ! :-D

I was considering using the cash saved there to pay for the 512MB RAM, but I went for it anyway
