Hi Trezzer, we are reading this, and the other threads too. It helps us understand things. We appreciate the "diamonds" we find in the "rough" and we benefit greatly from information we gather on these boards.
You are wrong about something: we are ready for "prime time." That is why we are going to CES. The Pegasos is a great platform. Sure, we have big plans for MorphOS and we know we have a way to go to get it where it needs to be, but it is pretty good now too. Have you tried it lately? You must know that the Pegasos is not just about MorphOS and Amiga applications and software. It is about providing an opportunity to create and innovate. It is about having a platform that can do new things and old things in better ways.
We have organized LinuxPPC Development Teams for Debian and Gentoo, and are putting together development agreements to bring other operating systems to the platform including OpenBeOS, NetBSD, OpenBSD, and NewOS. The SuSE guys have had a Pegasos for months. We are also very close to the Mac-on-Linux folks, who have participated in two public presentations with us and are even willing to join us at CES. The idea is to bring innovative and capable Developers to the platform and give them the support and freedom to be creative. These are "niche" markets, but rich in talent (and many came from the Amiga Community originally before they went on to these other "alternative" operating systems). With these smart people working with us we will have the chance to make the next step.
Participating in CES or Comdex is no small feat. You go for one of two reasons -- exposure and new relationships -- both lead to the promotion and sale of your product. We are focused on new markets and opportunities, but we will clue you in on some of our thinking...
We have leveaged the Amiga market and community to help us launched the Pegasos and MorphOS. Why not? We have been around this community for a while, had relationships here and have more now, and saw the potential. Genesi really has a chance to do something, as we have not only great intellectual property (hardware and software), but many of the best people from this Community excited and working with us or assisting us as they can.
The mass computer market is increasing oriented on value and less on the speed of the CPU or the size of the memory. People do things with computers and "most" people do not need what is found on the "high end." That should be where the Pegasos, MorphOS, and whatever else should fit in. People want something that is easy to work with and does what they want when they want it to do it. Computing should be about making people's lives more convenient, or more interesting or more fun. In the ultimate assessment computers need to do what people want them to do (and quickly!). We think we *are* finding the Developers we need to help us create such a platform.
We have a good group here in Europe that grows weekly. Now, we are starting to build a team in the US and Canada. For example, we will be working closely with groups like the Phoenix Developer Consortium. Have you seen
www.pegasos-usa.com? This site is just a model that will continue to improve and become part of a package to our "franchised" distributors. In the meanwhile,
www.pegasos.com.au is up too and we will be heading to Sydney in May for the Australian version of CeBIT (might as well slip that in here too).
The Pegasos OpenFirmware is also attracting plenty of hardware developers. Our favorite project currently is a solar powered power supply for the eclipsis. It is just a "hobby" project for a "crazy" guy, but that is how "big things" get started.
So, sorry to tell you this Trezzer, but for some folks we are "Amiga" too. With every post we make we receive at least a few emails that are detailed, helpful, and informative. Plus, we get plenty of "advice" and many times it is quite valuable. You should know there is a large, silent majority in this Community who rarely post, but contribute in other ways. We appreciate very much all the support we get.
That is the last post for now...Happy Holidays everyone! Please come say hello to us at CES. We will be in Booth #29101.
Best regards,
R&B :-D
