Newbie needs help - A1000 Kickstart
« on: March 23, 2009, 03:53:15 PM »
Okay, I got me an Amiga 1000 on ebay recently.  It came with nothing but Keyboard and system.  I have an Amiga 500, but didn't realize the 1000 needs a floppy for the Kickstart!

Is there a way I can make a kickstart floppy for my A1000 with my A500?

Thanks for any help!

Yes, WriteKickDisk should do this job or get a Kickstart Adapter.

That website for Kickstart adapter is not in English.  Does it bypass the kickram card or does it still require it?

It replaces the Even/Odd chips and provides a socket for an A500 rom chip. So no need for loading from disk.

So all I have to do is run the Transrom program on my Amiga 500 - making a rom file of the 1.2 Rom and then make it a floppy?  I think that is what it is saying, just want to make sure I got it!

Thanks!

...or you could read the thread that was posted no longer than a few weeks ago where ZeeBeeDee posted a link that had ALL of the A1000's Kickstarts available for download to disk...

Yes, it should work like this.

I have an A1000 w/o a Kickstart RAM board so I was thinking if this board would work without that board in the machine.

If you have an A1000, you already have the "Kickstart RAM board"... it's called the Daughterboard. And necessary for Kickstart, from disk, to be loaded into the 256kb WOM memory that the native Daughterboard provides.

What DJ is talking about requires desoldering(?) and/or removing a pair of chips on the A1000's motherboard and popping in his Kickstart adapter board, which would then accept a 16-bit A500/A2000 Kickstart ROM. Pretty slick piece of kit, which, thanks to this thread; reminded me that I "needed" one of these. LOL!

Edit: I read what DJBase said about the chips being socketed. That would be great if they are. I had thought they weren't on one of my A1000's, but could be mistaken. Will know soon enough :-)

You don't need an extra Kickstart RAM board. This adapter works with any standard A1000.

Nice bit of Amiga gear for the A1000.  What do you charge for one of them?

It solders in place, or are the chips it replaces in sockets?
How are you helping the Amiga community? :)

The Even/Odd chips should be in socket already so it it an easy replacement. You need to change some jumpers and solder 2 wires and 2 resistors. Price would be 10 Euro.

Yes it did!  I know have my Amiga 1000 booting up Kickstart 1.3 / WB 1.3

Of course, my A1000 only has 512K of Ram, so now I got to figure out the best way to upgrade the Ram!

I just recently won a A2000 on ebay and its suppose to be delivered today, so I may just "shelf" my A1000 as a personal collectors item and work on upgradeding - tricking out - my new-to-me A2000.

BTW-FYI  my A1000 had a bad keyboard cable and it was easily replaced with a phone headset cable I had laying around...

Also, I have to say Amiga Explorer program rocks!  It make working with my A500 and moving files back/forth very easy.  And it works with Vista 32-bit Premium edition on my laptop too!

Thanks for all the info!

Note that kickstarting the A1000 does only take you up to 1.3; 2.0 doesn't fit into the WOM any more.

@Matthias
Is it possible to fit a 2.0 ROM on the Kickstart adapter?

You can use 1.2 up to 3.1
