Wait....if you don't tip your waiters, how much do they make an hour then?? As it stands in the States, if you make tips, you get a whopping 2.13 an hour, so you're kinda dependent on tips.

And just so you know, coming from a former waiter and still a part-time bartender, 10% is rude....15% is the norm. I guess you all *DO* need a tip calculator. Thank God for Amiga Inc.

Thank Zeus I live in a country where we pay people a living wage and don't make them beg for money.  Tipping is just so Jeves and Wooster...

But back to the question, exactly who would I send a creepy snowman to?  Christmas here is on the beach, "Winter" is maybe just once approaching freezing and comes in August.  I note that KMOS, the current Amiga Inc has *never* produced anything Amiga compatible...

@ Methuselas >> In Denmark we have a minimum wage, that is around 20$ so you are guarantied at least that amount per hour.

Yes the UK has minium wage.  So people get paid a decent wage.

I personally only tip if I have received better than normal service.

The way it should be.

I thought the USA had minium wagwe too ?  or you do and its really really low ?

Between £3.53 and £5.73 per hour depending on the age of the worker.

That's about £1.40. That would be illegal in England.

IMO, *expecting* a tip is rude. Why should I tip somebody for doing their job, for which they are paid a salary?

I went to New York a couple of years ago, and went to a bar in Times Square. The barman there clocked us as we walked in, and watched us walk up to the bar. Despite this, he made absolutely no effort to approach us to take our order, preferring to stay at the other end of the bar so he could chat to his friend. Eventually I had to ask him if we could order some drinks. After we had ordered and I had paid, he stood there staring at me like he was expecting something. I asked him if I had got the money wrong, and he said "how about a tip?" I was naturally infuriated by him expecting a tip for such poor service, so I responded by saying "of course, a tip: look both ways before you cross the road".

Moral of the story: anybody who gives anything less than exceptional service is extremely unlikely to get a tip from me, especially if they ask for it.

Some US states have different minimum wage and that is broken down to tip and non-tip hour wages.  Non-tip wage is $7.21 @ hour, if you receive tips, it drops to $4.19.  By all means, if the server isn't doing their job (and it's clearly their fault and not kitchen's staff or just plain busier then all heck for them), don't tip.

Useful breakdown, by US state:

Minimum Wages for Tipped Employees
http://www.dol.gov/esa/whd/state/tipped.htm

Any state that only mandates the bare minimum required by US federal law isn't doing much for its citizens. (Businesses love it, of course. I suppose it would be different if they got to take a cut of the tips, and I'm sure the lack of a cut is the basis of the argument for the lower wage.)

It comes down to culture. In the US, there's a culture of tipping and it's expected, almost like "service tax" and should be provided unless the service was below par. It's not just for exceptionally good service.

Here in Ireland, 10% is normal if you had, for example, a good meal with nice service. Excellent personal service might see a bit more, while disinterested staff and poor service won't get a tip at all. That way, most people strive to give as good a service as they can. Expecting or asking for a tip would be considered rude.

Doesn't go for bars though - there's no tipping the barman, otherwise we'd all be broke! ;-)

We tip in bars (and casinos, of course), too, but good tips are usually balanced by free drinks, top shelf liquor, extra flirting from the waitress ;-), etc.

EDIT: I don't tip delivery people, though, especially the pizza guy. I did tip, however, before they started charging delivery fees.

EDIT2: And I hate tipping the bell service, doorman, etc. at hotels, but I do it anyway.
