OS on SAM install
« on: October 23, 2008, 05:30:10 AM »
Ok.. I am missing something.

I have tried to install OS4.1 on the Sam 440 and can not get it too boot.  I have tried it like 4 times and set the right FS.. block size.. slb and copied all the files (installer) and it always says it can not find a file system (157?) for boot.  I have looked in the uboot and told it to use a SATA drive to boot as well as the CD ROM and it does not seem to help...

What am I missing?

Thanks

Tim

Good luck Tim, I had to try a few times before I got MorphOS2.1 installed on the EFIKA.

I hope someone can help you quickly.

The SAM version didn't come with a manual?

Been a while since I've had to play with UBoot on my A1, but I imagine the SAM is similar. Can you post the contents of the NVRAM? (There's a command in C: to dump it to a shell.)

It did come with a install guide that I have read very closely but it does not cover UBOOT.  I have done the install several time.  I know AOS 3 very well so I have that advantage since there are very similar  ideas but it still does not boot.

I have looked at UBOOT and have selected the SATA drive as a boot device but it did not see the SLB an displayed an error.

I will try it one more time and look at UBOOT closer and post it here.

Thanks

Thanks Dave... I sure we can get it figured out.  I wish I had the case and HD at the show.. they would have gotten it figured out.

Have you installed Workbench on a FFS or SFS partition? The latest version of UBoot does not recognise JXFS partitions.

I tried both SFS and FFS with 512 block size.  Like I said I read the install doc very closely.

It gives me an error in Uboot that is can't find AOS4 SLB. I have installed it from l: from the CD.

AOS4 FLB
No know boot method for device 156
FLB: no SLB found on any of the designated boot sources; returning to u-boot.

I have tried to set u-boot to use the SATA onboard hard drive but it never finds anything to boot and I get the same error.  I can only get it boot the CD-ROM.

I have made sure the boot partition is FFS and or SFS with 512  block partition with automount and bootable selected.  I tried making 1 gig, 2, 4 in size and it still did not work.

I can boot the CD and see the drive (dh0) and it works. I can load a even load files from the drive so I know the data is good.

I am wondering if the Beta 4.1 CD they gave me is wrong in some way.

Looks like an SLB problem - did you install the SLB with Media Toolbox? I don't know how Media Toolbox looks under 4.1 now, because it's already different between 4.0 for AmigaOnes and 4.0 for PowerUp, but under expert mode there should be an option to install drive init code in the Install/Edit RDB window.

Yes I did.. I selected the drive and then chose install and selected the SLB listed in l:  It shows that it is installed.  I have rebooted and checked it again and it still says it is installed.

Thanks

Yes, he bought it at the AmiWest show from AmigaKit.

Tim, have you contacted AmigaKit to see if there is somewhere you can download the AmigaOS4.1 iso and burn it to a CD to replace the one you have, or if they can send you another to replace yours?
How are you helping the Amiga community? :)

@omnicron10

The error message says that it did not find an SLB. Assuming that you did install the SLB properly, that you did save the partition table before resetting (seeing as you can read the drive), the other possibility is that your UBoot env variables have been messed up. In the UBoot prompt, type printenv and tell us what it says. Also, does UBoot list your hard-drive on startup?

Another possibility, although unlikely, is that you didn't install the correct file as SLB. It's been years since I touched this, but it should ask you to select a file as SLB. Make sure that you choose the right one.

This is one of those situations where I would say "give me the keyboard and I'll take a look," unfortunately you're way too far away for that.

Are you sure that the partition you installed AOS4.1 on is bootable?

If yes then try this:

-Boot with your installation cd.
-Once Worjbench is loaded launch Media ToolBox
- Edit the RDB of you Hard Drive
- REMOVE the SLB and save
- Launch again Media ToolBox
- Edit again your HD RDB
- Install the new SLB from the CD. The installed SLB should report as l:slb_v2 lenght 28988 ver 1.18
- Save, remove the CD and reboot (hard reset)
- If all went well you should now be able to boot from HD.

@omnicron10

Try this at the uboot shell prompt,

Type menu

You should be able to select the boot drive. Select your HD, exit back to uboot, then type

ide reset
boota

Hopefully you'll boot right up.

@omnicron10
Here is a dump of the relevant uboot vars in my SAM440ep:
ide_cd_timeout=20
ide_doreset=on
ide_reset_timeout=10
bootcmd=menu; run menuboot_cmd
bootdelay=3
boot1=s4siicdrom
boot2=s4sii
boot3=
boot_config=Default
boota_timeout=3
boot_method=boota
menuboot_cmd=boota
menucmd=menu
menuboot_delay=3

You may want to double check what you have if Lecta's advice doesn't work for you.
