The slimline roctecs are the only ones I'd advise to avoid, as they are belt driven.
Everything else - no matter. Just get one you like. The 1" high ones are all 99% identical anyway. The mechanism will vary - TEAC, Sony, Panasonic, but there's only so many ways you can make the drive id/motor control logic board.
(there is actually a bug in the Hedaka HED-228 that it never turns off the spindle motor, but that is just one trace to cut on the PCB)
