Can anyone tell me the best external disk drive for the A500, need to get a new one.??

I've got a A1010, but I don't know about it being the best. The 1010 was the big 880K drive from the A1000 era. Shipping from the USA would be costly too as the A1010 is a heavy beast.

IMHO the California Access CA-880 disk drive is the best!  It is slim, attractive, high quality, it daisy chains, and it even has a disable switch on the back.

I liked my Golem external drive a lot (and it got a good test score in a Danish Amiga magazine back in the day as well)

Agreed! Cumana drives were always neat, tidy, and much quieter than those hulking great C= drives!


And Cumana's Atari ST drives were good too!

The slimline roctecs are the only ones I'd advise to avoid, as they are belt driven.

Everything else - no matter. Just get one you like. The 1" high ones are all 99% identical anyway. The mechanism will vary - TEAC, Sony, Panasonic, but there's only so many ways you can make the drive id/motor control logic board.

(there is actually a bug in the Hedaka HED-228 that it never turns off the spindle motor, but that is just one trace to cut on the PCB)

If your going for practicality then get a slimline drive otherwise go for a 1010 as they were the original Amiga drive. :-D
