I can talk a lot about the deregulatory environment started by Reagan and finished by Bush which allowed, among other things, the rampant subprime mortgage lending and its attendant problems. They just made it so you almost couldn't get a regular mortgage, ever, then provided these second tier things instead. bald faced avarice. My experience with this is very personal, and very expensive :-( This sort of thing was ILLEGAL before Bush, and for good reason. Now it will be illegal again, I hope.
I did just get my GB A1000 board though, and it might be the bend in the end for my fast RAM deficient 3000 :-/
