A Few Amithlon Questions....
« on: August 10, 2003, 07:37:03 AM »
I've set up Amithlon again. Can you please answer these questions:

1. To install I simply created a Linux boot partition and AOS parition (0x76) and installed the isolinux files into the boot partition. Then booted from HD, used the HDToolbox in the minimal OS3.9 folder to setup the volumes on the "virtual" Amiga partition, installed OS3.9 onto my volume from the CDROM then changed the boot priority on the newly created volume to 0 then reset. Is this the way to do it? I can still see that minimal OS39 volume on my desktop... can i get rid of it?

2. How do I know if my nVidia card is being used in native mode not VESA mode?

3. How do i find out whether my HDD controller is being properly detected and not in PIO-0 mode?

4. Is there any special way to shut down Amithlon / Workbench or do I just power off the PC?

Thanks.

2.All I know for Amithlon is that it works with the Geforce 2 cards.  My Geforce 4 will not work natively.

4.Just shut down the PC by hitting the power switch ;)

I tried to help you the best I can, and can only answer half your questions ;)

Another problem you might run into is the network. Since there are only a batch of cards that work, you probably cant use normal ones you buy at computer stores. I happen to have the one that works perfectly with amithlon, and works swiftly.

PIO 0 ?? There is as far as I know no setting for on a pc, it just works at full speed which is megafast compared to a normal Amiga. About turning the damn thing off, indeed, just hit the power button !! :)
Gfx card ?? I use a 2nd hand Ebay GeForce2 MX 400 64 Mb PCI card that I got for 40 euro. I allows screenmodes in 8bit, 16 bit and 32 bit. If you take a non supported card that you only get 1 screenmode, 640x256 I think ...
I use a harddisc that I prepared when booting with the Amithlon cd. Later I took a scrap 40 Mb IDE hd (one without jumpers for master/slave) and now I use that one to boot up the computer without cd. :)

So there is still no write-behind caching on Amiga? There is no need to shutdown Workbench?

@Ranchu

1 - yes, you can get rid of it by using the smallird image rather than the bigird when loading the kernel.

2 - check under the Amiga screenmodes. If you get a full range and can change resolution on the fly, you'll be using the nVidia driver.

3 - Test the speed. You should get in excess of 30MB/s on any modern system, but you won't get anywhere near that in PIO-0.

4 - Hit the power switch. :)
(There is also a soft shutdown command somewhere, but this was made available as an unofficial extra, and may be hard to find now that Yahoo Groups have removed all attachments from their archives, unless someone has put the file on their site)

Finally, you are free to ask these questions in the AmithlonOpen list now, as your membership has been approved.
