Hello there,  Steve here currently a tech support guy at CCLOnline.com

Got talking about my old A600 at work today (which is still boxed and in the loft)that I've had since I was 10, (20 now) and got talking about how I always wanted a HDD in it etc and one of the guys shouted "The 600 has an onboard IDE controller for a 2.5 Drive" Obviously I retorted with "Bol**ks"

Turns out it's true.. so basically I've come here to pick the brains of you humble residents of Amiga.org Which if you don't mind I will do in this topic (so as not to go on a posting spree)

Firstly a couple of questions... I've ordered my IDE cable so I can connect a lappy drive to it.

Now for the tricky things..

1: Which OS can I install without purchasing a CD Rom drive for it. Basically it's bog standard apart from having a 40GB  Laptop drive in it.

2: Once i've got an OS installed on it, what else can I do with it?

Back? Hell I never left.. *Throws Cannon Fodder Disk Onto the table* That bad boy has been in my pocket since I was 9, Thats how oldskool I am lol.


I was originally looking at that site but it doesn't explain how to go about installing the OS after installing the drive.
Basically I would like some one to draw in crayon what I gota do to get it booting off the disk and loading the OS, or workbench if I can get it to boot workbench off the drive I'll be happy, I could finally install all those demo's I have on disks that came with Amiga mags and install Valhalla again and actually SAVE ha.

Pop over to Amigakit and buy AmigaOS 3.1 that should do the job :-)

Welcome back to the Amiga....

What ROM version does your A600 have? (Version number shown on boot screen).

Not all A600 ROM versions can access the IDE controller. You may need to buy a ROM upgrade.

What size HDD you got? For simplicity sake, 4GB is the A600 limit.

Yeah been looking at that, but 3.1 won't support my laptop HDD will it? Is there no way I can get 4 on there without a CD? can I make an image of the os 4 disk and put it on the HDD or am I just way ahead of Amiga's time?

Of course it will!!! Why on earth do you think it wouldn't?

Forget 4... it's PPC only, it will never run on the A600... it doesn't offer much over 3.1 anyway.

os4 is PPC only.

WB2.1 is the best bet for you.

A preinstalled Workbench like this one is the simplest solution. http://classicwb.abime.net/classicweb/gaae.htm

You still need WB2.1 disks to complete the install.

Be sure to partition your HDD so the 1st partition is less than 4GB

Ah kk, the reason I thaught that is....

"You can use any 2.5 inch hard drive you want in the Amiga 600. You will however need a cable that fits the narrow 2.5 inch IDE connector. The hard drive also gets power through this connector. Keep in mind that the Amiga OS is very memory efficient. A 500 to 1000 MByte hard drive will suffice easily. If you want to install other operating systems like Linux or MacOS, too, you will however need a larger disk. If the hard disk you plan to use is larger than 4 GB, you will need at least Amiga OS 3.5 (3.1 will only work with some patches)."

Taken from the amiga600.de site....

You'll only need the patches if you want to use more than 4gig of the drive... make a partition about 2 gig in size and get the OS installed. Then add the new IDE driver, and then partition the rest of the drive :-)

Ah, it's all slowly starting to make sence.. Kinda' I've bookmarked all the pages, and was shocked to find that Paul, the guy who created the workbench i'm going to install died at 27....


I'll get the drive installed hopefully Wednesday when this cable turns up, you'll probably hear from me then no doubt.

I prefered the look of the OS to the workbench, I'll probably just try that 3.1 after the workbench is on, surely it can't be that hard *rolls eyes* I've still got a 600 page book on "Coding in Amiga Basic" if that will help me any... Came with the Amiga .

You should have a AmigaOS 2.xx disk called Install. that one is used to install amiga OS on HD, partition it etc.

But like bloodline suggest, upgrading to OS 3.1 is recommended. That would include new rom chip and disks.

Then its basicly down to what you want.
To take advantage of the full 40gb hd out of the box I would recommend a IDE interface from  ELBOX. It ships with lba48 adressing modes drivers and with added features of CD/DVD drivers and an additional IDE port.

To get the fastest performance I would recommend SFS filesystem aswell.

so to sum it up: this would be recommended.

OS 3.1 floppy set
OS 3.1 Rom A600

Elbox IDE interface

If you know your way around EBAY you can get this considerably cheaper.

Next you should perhaps forget about os 3.9 and above. you can get 3.1 fairly up to speed with the updates classicWB contains.

Workbench is part of the OS...? not sure what you mean here...

I don't think AmigaBASIC came with the A600... last amiga to have that was the A500... I'm sure... :-?
