There are a few ways to get WinUAE to run at startup.

1) Copy the Start Menu shortcut to the Programs\Startup Folder. This is the easiest method.

2) Create a text file with the following:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"WinUAE"=C:\\Program Files\\WinUAE\\WinUAE.exe"  -parameters

Save it to your desktop as WinUAE.reg, then right click it and select import. Copy the parameters from your Start Menu shortcut.

To run WinUAE as a destop replacement requires method 2, Google for the registry key to edit.

If you are unsure about any of the instructions, use method 1.

I've done it in the past with a dual boot config, you'll need to dig into the registry.

Something like this:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon] "Shell"="path_to_winuae\winuae.exe"

Then when your Windows box boots up, it ends running WinUAE instead of loading the desktop.

1. Start regedit.
2. Go to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon"
3. Edit "Shell" key, change it to whatever command you wish to start. In this case something along the lines: "C:\Program Files\WinUAE\WinUAE.exe" -options.

If you wish to make UAE start automagically with some given configuration use options: -f "C:\path\to\config.uae" -s use_gui=no

I used the reg trick auto loading WinUAE a while back on an old Laptop... that was fun... just like a brand new Amiga really :-)

Then again, if you need full Windows desktop too, then why not just run WinUAE from a desktop shortcut when you need it? That's way faster than rebooting the system.

I am also looking at doing something similar to this except without having Windows at all. I am going to load a copy of Dos on one of my old PC's and boot up dosuae as if it were just like the main OS. I posted on another thread about a Dos version of Winuae and done a google search and found the Dosuae page. You may also want to look at this method so you dont have to have Windows on the computer at all. Remember the old days when you had to have Dos to run Windows? This would really be the same thing, just Dosuae replacing Windows and Dos would still be in the background like Windows 3.1 was back in the old days.

I used to do that at University on their machines :-) But Windows has better drivers and WinUAE is better than DosUAE... so the windows based solution is preferable!

By having 2 partitions, you can have a complete Windows and desktop on one, and a minimal install made with nLite on the other. That way you have full compatibility on the Windows side, and a faster and more efficient emulation environment on the other.

Rebooting Windows isn't the chore people claim it to be, if you apply some knowledge, time and effort. My XP boots very quickly, and shuts down in seconds. That's because I took the time to tailor it to my needs, instead of just installing from an OEM disc.
