Sorry but that's ridiculous. Have you ever tried to get under the bonnet on a Mac? If you had, you would realise that it is entirely possible, even moreso than Amiga OS. Mac OS X is essentially BSD with a pretty face. But the guts of BSD is still there. You still have root access, so you can do whatever you want.

Maybe I should have worded that better. Try this: Getting under the bonnet of a Mac is not as much fun or as intuitive as an Amiga. The Mac gives you the tools but if I could be bothered to play with a Mac in this way I may as well use Linux.

That statement is contradictory. Mac OS X is more similar to Linux than it is to Amiga OS. Getting under the bonnet of Mac OS X is similar to getting under the bonnet in Linux.

Yes it is, but Linux is free. Therefore, I may as well use it in preference to Mac OS. Not contradictory at all, just economics.
Falling into a dark and red rage.

Of course that is a matter of opinion, and I actually agree with you. But that doesn't mean you can't do it on a Mac :-)

Fair enough. But IMO, what is great about Mac OS X is that everything works out of the box, and is easy and fun to use, but lets you get under the bonnet if you want. Compared to a lot of Linux distros, which can be quite obtuse in daily use, forcing you to tweak under the bonnet even if you don't want to. Having said that, I do acknowledge that several more modern distros are much more friendly to the casual user (Ubuntu comes to mind). Though I challenge anyone to use Linux as their main OS and never have to go under the bonnet.

Getting off the point a little, but this is all relevant to my opinion of OS X :-)

Ahh, well that's a different story entirely :-) The part of OS X that you pay for is the nice easy front end. If that's not important to you, then of course don't bother buying it ;-)

Come on man, now your clearly trolling - that's one hell of a schedule if you call ten years late 'on schedule'...

Please define "trolling". I see this term scattered about the forums quite liberally but I do not know what it means.

I use Ubuntu daily at the office by choice. I haven't had to go under the bonnet for anything. I am using a Dell Latitude D630 and everything just works. Now if "under the bonnet" means installing apps via the command line versus the GUI then yes I have.. it's faster to type "sudo apt-get install xxxx" than to have to wade around in the GUI. However, this is not a necessity.

With that said, my computer at home is a MacBook Pro. Though I think my next computer will be a Dell Latitude of some sort with Ubuntu. I would rather save $600-700 and get a faster machine.

Trolling for an argument? I think you're thinking of 'trawling  for an argument' there.  ;-)

And with the news from Colanto, you will be able to have a easier, better Amiga emulation experience over Linux with AmigaForever 2008 on that new Dell.
How are you helping the Amiga community? :)

One of the things I'm trying to do at my job is do away with the MS WIndows servers and replace them with a combination of X Serve and Suse machines.  Dos prompt is so limited when compared to Terminal on a Mac or Linux box and it so hard to tweak it.

The mice thing about Mac is they give you some great GUI tools without taking away the terminal.

What we\'re witnessing is the sad, lonely crowing of that last, doomed cock.

SuSe OES2 is an amazing server OS. Easy to manage and Novell's support of SuSe gets better every day. I'd say by the time SuSe OES3 comes out Novell will have blended the best of their products fully into the best that Linux has to offer. Definitely a good pick for server OS.

As for Mac, I won't be a troll.

I would beg to differ on the need to "get under the bonnet" when devoting your desktop to Linux. Ubuntu has yet to require me to do such a thing. I am a Mac user as well - however I am beginning to be one who is really shifting away. Primarily due to personal politics - be careful about what you ask for with Apple. Not to sound like a wacko but what is the difference between Apple and M$ business model?? - One just had the leg up in world domination I guess. The other could get there, however the machines will look cooler I guess.

I challenge you to do the same w/the outdated OS the Amiga runs on now.  The Amiga OS as it is is comprised of hacks/kludges on top of a very old operating system.

I use Linux as my primary operating system and am comfortable taking it under the knife.

Interesting. Might give Ubuntu another try under Parallels :-)

To be frank, I don't care. Their business model is of no concern to me as long as they deliver products I like at a price I can afford.

I never said you didn't have to do this with the Amiga. In fact, I agreed that it was entirely possible (and fun). There's no way I would want to use Amiga OS without any hacking/patching.
