TBH, I think you might be disappointed with the Pegasos. You are obviously in to the "classic" Amiga hardware and the whole Amiga experience. A Pegasos is not really an Amiga, and it *doesn't* run Amiga OS, except through emulation (and you have already said that UAE doesn't feel like using an Amiga - I can relate to that). I think if you get the Pegasos you will be missing that Amiga feeling, even though MorphOS is a great OS and the board is quite powerful.

Always this misinformation, miswording! Of course MorphOS is not
AmigaOS, but it is also *not* an OS emulation.
MorphOS is an AmigaOS *compatible* OS. Compatibility is achieved by
sharing the same API and an integrated 68k emulator for 68k
applications (a processor emulator, but *no* OS emulator, not that
68k apps use the ppc native OS when calling system routines. Nothing
emulated is used here except the processor to run the legacy apps).

Of course MorphOS does not run Amiga applications which directly bang
the hardware (that's mostly games and *old* sound/gfx software).

I never said it was an OS emulation. What I said was not misinformation. I merely stated that if he wants to run Amiga OS on the Pegasos, he will have to emulate an Amiga.

Again, I never said this was the case.

I think i'll go for the Apollo '060.

A lot of games/programs have an "Install to HD" icon/utility somewhere, and that will put the game on your HD for you. You just have to follow the prompts. If the game is on more than one floppy disk then the Install program is quite often not on Disk 1 of the set.
If the game is an AmigaDOS compatible disk - i.e. you can see the files on the disk in Workbench - then it is often enough to simply copy the entire thing into a drawer on your hard disk and maybe add an Assign or two in a startup-script to point to that location.
If the game needs codes or has some other copy-protection, then this will not circumvent it - you will still need to enter the right code(s) from the manual or wherever when requested.
:)

In the end only you know what you want. IF you want a PC that runs Amiga related stuff, get that Peggy. IF you want to use a true Amiga and want to boost it's speed, get the 060 (which is what I would get).
It's as simple as that and only you know what you want so all this is strictly un-nessasary.

Why not just get a PC? things like amikit or even amithlon are pretty sweet!

Better still get a BPPC and bvision then you can run OS3.9/4.0 or MorphOS (as stated he wanted to run OS4)

Best advice your going to get is forget about everything posted in this thread and play with your little A600 and 1200 and find out what you enjoy doing. Theres's no point to having a top end Amiga just to play lower end games and apps like Dpaint,Ppaint,soundtracker etc etc. A basic system will give you hours off fun (030 with abit of memory and OS3.1)the rest is all really eye candy!

*sigh*.  I give up.  This thread is pointless.  You really don't know what you want - it seems every five minutes you are onto something new - and there is no point asking us here.

Good luck though!

Here is what I would use an A600 for:

It's very portable, get a small LCD screen (w/ RCA inputs)and take it with you wherever you go. Low power consumption means you could run it from your car with an inverter. Play games while you're on a camping holiday.

If you like to do music then it would be useful in dj'ing/performances. Some extra mem would help though.

Alternativley, you could sell the innards to me and your sister will never know that you've sold the gift she gave you.

Seriously though, like Mr.'nasty' says:

This is the best comment i've seen and even someone as amazingly bright as me (he wishes) I didn't think of that. Give it atleast a month or 2 and find out what you like and/or dislike about the Amiga's you use before you go out flashing your cash about rather then constantly changing your mind like a magpie.

@Gwion:

I suggest you install the (brand new ?) GAAE version of ClassicWB on it. You'll be surprised what this little machine can do.  :-)

@Gwion

I'm well impress that someone at your age has an appreciation for these little gems. Amiga's that is. Personally my heart flutters every time I pass my Amiga's. I just have to stop and turn them on. I'm aware of the rep that A600's have in the community, but I couldn't care less. I love the little buggers. That's why I have 3 of them. :-D
All stock and all functioning. Even the most staunch Amiga user knows that these machines are all but obsolete in the sense that newer modern machines out perform them in pretty much every way. But you know what, that doesn't even matter really. Being an Amiga user is a love affair. You know all the faults and short comings of them, but you still adore them anyway. For most of us it was the philosophy of the techies at Commodore back in the 80s and early 90s that captured our interest. Even if the money and management  people were determined to run CBM into the ground.

I say, just enjoy the little beasty. Set it up on a desk somewhere so you can see it every time you walk by. So your mates can ask you, what the hell is that? and you can have the joy of explaining it to them. You can tell them that once upon a time, before Micro$oft had conquered the world, there were alternatives to PCs and Macs. That the world was once filled with companies all jostling to get their own little home computer Frankenstein onto the market. All brimming with chicklet keyboards, tape drives and on very rare occasions, floppy drives. Ahh, such was the naissance of home computing. Let hope we get to have a renaissance.
