Another Amix (Amiga Unix) Install
« on: October 08, 2007, 07:17:39 PM »
I just finished installing Amix 2.1 on my A3000UX using the HD method on Failure's web site. It's a real kick to play with. I wouldn't have made it through it without his information. Thank you for preserving it Failure!

I haven't added network or graphic cards yet.  I would also like to make the tape as I have a mothballed A3070 and some new tapes around. I haven't worked out how to get the files on to the Amix side of the machine yet.

Fun Stuff!

Jeff

How long does it take to boot up?

Is there a graphics interface?

Boots up right away, it only takes a few seconds. It's command line only and 1 bit color right now. I don't think you can even run X locally although I have only had it installed for about an hour.

Read about it here;

Amix

It's probably easier to write the tapes from the AmigaOS side. I found a tool on Aminet but can't remember what it actually was.  :roll:

I had to do quite a bit of reading to figure out what you were talking about ( :-o ), but all I can say with my new insight is:

"wow... that is cool."
and
"boy I wish I had the HW to try this!"

:-D :-D :-D

Were you able to get the patch disk installed?

And there is an X interface, it's called OpenLook. I think 'olinit' will bring it up.

I haven't tried the patch disk yet. I was going to try and do the tape install first. My A3070 still works, I just made a backup of Workbench and it verified ok. I wonder if I can write the tape from my Ubuntu box?

Anyway, Openlook works fine thanks for the tip.

Now that I think about it more, I actually remember the patch disk clobbering my installation - it apparently relies on the package system that only works with a genuine tape installation. And I don't have a 3070.

@Matt

I just bought an A2065 so as long as that works I'll have a way to get the files to the Amix box in a week or so via NFS. I already have 3 different Amiga network cards but no 2065:-o Until then I might try writing the tape out on my Linux box.

I can do a tape install on a blank SCSI HD and mail it back to you if it all works on my machine. That is if you even still mess with this stuff. It is REALLY dated, still fun though.

It reminds me a lot of an old Slackware 1.0 Linux box I built back in the early 90's :-D

Thanks again,
Jeff

He, I'm running Amix on an A3k UX too. Here is a link how to create the install tape from Amiga OS (ehhhh 3.9 not 4 or 5 :-) )

http://www.amiga.org/forums/showthread.php?t=19629

I'm trying to create a gfx driver for a cv64 using the NetBSD code for the same card, but this is a long term project ... Running on WinUAE will not work I think. Amix needs a working MMU for a 030 processor. My A3k box is running with an Phase 5 Blizzard 4030 (68030 at 50 MHz). This is the maximum available speed.

(EDIT) I found 2.1 tape files on Failures site. They just weren't visable to me at first. Must be a having senior moment.

(EDIT Again) I have created the 2.1 tape/floppies and finished the install. The patch disk ran fine and updated the system to 2.1p2a:-D

@AmireX
The Amiga tape creation script was a HUGE help. Thank You for providing it! I can't wait to start playing around with Unix!

Thanks Again,
Jeff
