Hi from NZL.
« on: September 13, 2007, 07:31:06 AM »
Hi,

I'm an Amiga user from New Zealand. I recently got my dusty 1200 out and am starting scan auction sites for parts to upgrade it to run OS3.9 nicely. Also got a 500+ and a CD32 which I think are still working. Guess I'll get stuck and need to ask a few questions I hope you guys can help me with! =)

To save making a new thread to ask a new-be question, I thought I would ask here, what is the deal with softhut.com? Do they actually have all the stuff on their site in stock? They have Blizzards, AmigaOne mobos etc on their site. I e-mailed them but got no response.

Chris.

Greetings from a fellow NZ Amiga user!

Haven't ordered anything from Softhut personally, but I can vouch for AmigaKit and Vesalia, though shipping takes a while from Europe...

I believe that Software Hut has not  updated parts of their website in years.  IIRC, The Amiga market is only a small part of their total business and sales have dropped off so dramatically for them, it is not worth their time and effort to keep the site current.  They just add some announcements from time to time when something new becomes available for them to sell.

If you write and ask about purchasing one, or a few items, instead of asking them a general question, they are much more likely to reply.

I have purchased many items from them going all the way back to the eighties when I got my first A1000 and upgraded it with an AdIDE w/105mb HD, Spirit 1.5mb RAM expansion, some kind of item to make the first external floppy recognized as DF0: since the HD was put in the original floppy drives place, etc.  I have never had any troubles with my purchases, but since the Amiga market is almost a side business for them now, they may not be as responsive as they once were.
How are you helping the Amiga community? :)

Welcome!

I have just joined here myself and in a similar situation with my A1200.

I'm in the UK so I think Amigakit is looking like the best place to get bits.

I'm going to start with adding an IDE HD I think. Then maybe upgrade the Rom, add a new HD and maybe change my 16mb RAM to 128mb.

Anyway goog luck with the upgrade and do post about your progress or with any questions. everyone round here is friendly and don't seem to mind answering any questions.

My eventual plan is to put the 1200 into a tower with a Mediator PCI board and a Blizzard card. And use an old Voodoo GFX card I have.

But, since finding a Blizzard will take a while and I don't want to start the tower project until I have it, for now I'll just stick to my stock 1200 with a 8MB ram expansion. And purchase a IDE->CF adaptor to use for the HDD and get a PCMCIA CF adaptor to use to transfer files from PC->Amiga.

Hopefully I can find an IDE and PCMICA --> CF adaptor here that will work and not have to purchase from Amikit etc right away, that should save a bit of money.

Hey man, good to hear from another NZ amiga user. Where;d you get an 030 at that price? That's an awesome deal! Just had a look on Trademe, lots of Amiga listings at the moment, I must sign up for an account.

I haven't heard of those other sites you mentioned I'll check them out now. Enjoy the holiday man.

@westy

SoftwareHut updated their website August 16,2007 according to their website. Thats almost exactly a month ago. They have some cool stuff...............we should always buy from them to keep them in business.

I like Software Hut and AmigaKit
CD32 is actually the best Amiga ever made by Commodore!...

I emailed them once and got a response eventually.  They only had a 030 combo board for an A2000. I already had one of those. I think you will find a bit on eBay from time to time. Especially over the water here in Aus. You can also post a "want to buy" but I cant remember how to do that.

All the best with the Amiga. They are nice machines.

PS: Never been to Auckland but Ive been to Welli and luved it.
