GVP's PC286 IBM emulator
« on: May 20, 2007, 05:29:19 AM »
I bought a PC286 on e-bay recently.  It came with disks but no manual.  Is anyone aware of a manual available on-line?

Sometimes it tries to work, I have managed to get an IBM bootscreen twice, all other attempts have left the Amiga rebooting endlessly.  I have not been able to boot Dos (IBM PCDos 7) yet.  I left an empty 30Meg partition on the hard drive for Dos but have been unable to do anything with that yet.  Does anyone have one of these working?

I scanned that manual and sent to amiga hardware database about a year ago, but somehow they didn't add it to their database.

Thank You countzero!

It's a shame that Amiga Hardware Database lost this opportunity.  They usually seem to value uploads.  Maybe it would be worth re-sending.  Are you and I the only Pc286 owners?

I have a PC286 in my GVP HD-A500+

It has been several years (circa 1995 since I last used the PC286) so hopefully I can remember.

I could never get the PC286 to work with a 2.05 rom or 3.1 rom.  I don't know if anyone else had this problem, if you can get it to work with a 3.1 rom, let me know.

I had to boot up with a 1.3 rom to get the PC286 to work properly.  I suggest using a multirom (or other rom board) as I found that boot files and programs like degrader acted weird with the PC286, as it does a soft reboot in some modes.

I also cannot get the PC286 to work with my VXL*30, I have to disable the 68030 and boot with the 68000.  It obviously works with the GVP A530, but other accelerators ???

Recap:  disable your accelerator, hard boot with a 1.3 rom

I found that the PC286 to limited to do anything real, a 286 in (~92-93 memory is failing) when this thing came out it was already very very slow and antiquated (486 were already out at the time).  The video modes were odd, and it only supported DD 720 disks (making it hard to put even windows 3.1 on it as most distributions are on HD disks, it cannot use 3.11 as that requires a 386)

If you can find a A2386 bridgeboard and a big box amiga, that would be the way to go.  I was able to run win 95 on my upgraded bridgeboard with a 486slc3 and 16 megs (using the simm ram hack), even up until circa 97-98 with most non-3d software.  It even ran warcraft I and doom fairly well, plus you could get a 2 meg 16bit ISA SVGA cards to work, and had the ability to use cd-roms.

I have a GVP A530 with the PC286 board.  It seems to work fine.  I'm on an A500 with 1.3.2 ROMs.

Do you know where I could get a copy of the disks?
They aren't on GVP website.

Thanks
