Stop the war!
« on: June 18, 2003, 10:26:57 PM »
All these arguments over if MorphOS is better than AmigaOS4 and if there should be AmigaOS4 on Pegasos is total pointless.
Why  there isn´t AmigaOS4 for Pegasos:
Do you really think Amiga DE Inc want to have anything with the name "Amiga" running on hardware manufactured by their worst enemy?
No Pegasos II has been sold yet, and Pegasos I is a to small market to cover development cost.
Genesi has this os called MorphOS, do they really want to support a competitor?

AOS4 for PegII could be made if they following would happen:
Amiga Inc goes bankcrupt and Hyperion gets full control over the AmigaOS4-rights and there is a profitable number of PegIIs sold for a port to be made. Also Genesi must provide documentation for the PegII chipset and a hardware dongle must be made.

Is MorphOS better than AmigaOS?
Both exist both run systemfriendly amigaprograms, the question is only relevant if you have an old  PPCamiga and want the most compatible solution.
Can you still boot into old WB3.1/3.9 if you install MOS or AOS?

Anyway stop arguing and learn to program for AROS if your not statisfied with any of the current choices.
Or admit that you just are PCusing trolls  :-)

The only amigaos that will run on hardware X is AROS *edit* as the situation looks today*edit* and it will have JIT for both x86  and PPC at some point in the future. AOS4 and MOS is just fill ins until the time when we get a stable AROS with JIT.

I applaud the idea of ending this "war" ... but i think this thread is a good basis for another flamewar ...

And then you suddenly drop all the software that MOS and OS4 has gathered when AROS is ready years down the line and start at square one again? No, don't think so. Considering the pace AROS is going, it's not really ever going to be a contender.

Anyway, you're just stating the war can be stopped by what you think is right. That's what causes the war in the first place! Everyone thinks they are right.

I really don´t want to start another war!
And we don´t really need to. Openamiga is the best solution as it will allow porting between the OSes with minimal adjustments. Hopefully in the future Openamiga will drop WB3.1 and use more of the new os functions and libraries in the future.

AROS development will pick up speed, just look at linux development in the beginning not to fast was it?
At a some point (developerkit and later TCP/IP)it will speed up.
What i meant was that there is no point in arguing over things that clearly will not happen in the current situation like AOS4 on Peg ( of course if it happened i would buy it, i like both genesi and hyperion)
Sorry, its midnight here and I´m a bit sleepy :-)
I have a A1200-060 and a pc and i will buy a PegII when  GGS-Data gets some(don´t have the money for A1). I really would like to be able to run all three amigaoses on it and BeOS and Linux and BSD ...
But when i use my computer i use programs and i have yet to see a program that´s a killer application for either MOS or AOS or AROS (Birdieshot vs MediaToolBox vs Kittywindowdemo  :-D ).
My old amiga does all i want  todo with a computer except internetaccess(opera is much faster than any amigabrowser), javaprograming and decoding the evil fileformats for schoolwork, movieplaying, some movieediting (just for fun),Tivolike tv-recording and running Civ3 and some other newer games.
Internetaccess and movieplaying can be solved with any amigaosvariant at the moment and hopefully the others will be too( except games that depends purely on number of users).

They only ones there should be a war against is Amiga DE Inc, since they don´t want any continuation of the real classic amigaos!

Hehehe, already working on that. The original Developer Guidelines were so vague they were ment as the idea basis, rather than the actual specification.
I hope to have a much more detailed guideline ready by next week. :-o

AROS developement will pick up once GCC goes native.  :-)

In a way, this "war" is good because it shows that we're passionate about our machines.. maybe?

Damn right!!! way better than Apathy... maybe?

Nah we just come from the early 90's when Computers were real and came in many forms and you could all have a good time proving that yours was better than you mates (who had Ataris or PeeSees)  :-D

@bloodline

Your host for openamiga.org sucks this week...  :-P

~runs~

Soon as 68K jit gets implemented I may switch over to using AROS full time tho.

Which would be better dual PIII 900's or a Athlon 1200?

Personally Athlon is my choice, cheaper and just as good. If you run linux alot then go for the dual CPU.

I spend a bit of today thinking about 68K emualtion in AROS... I wish I had some free time to try stuff out :-/

Price of the 2 machines isn't an issue as I have them both.    My next system will be a dual opteron soon as they put out a board with a damn AGP slot.  :-D

A swedish home-electronics mag came to the conclusion that Amiga was the best home computer for anything other than MSOffice, especially on videoediting( it was the days of videodirector and genlocks), i still got it here on a bookshelf.

Palomino Athlon 1600+ is the best CPU I've ever owned.  Stable, and the CPU die is huge, which makes it pretty easy to cool.  Thouroughbred Athlons are a real pain.  If I knew how hard it was to cool those tiny chips, I would've bought a P4.  I am so sick of the noise, and watercooling seems like such a huge investment when I can just buy a P4 like my dad.  His computer is SILENT, man.  His monitor makes more noise than the computer!

As for MorphOS vs AmigaOS, I could care less.  Use what works.  Both are going to branch off into directions less and less "Amiga" (which might be a good thing).  I don't know much about MorphOS, though, and I don't really care.

@Waccoon

Water cooling has come down alot in the past year...  And just remember it's not like you can't move it to a new machine when you upgrade.  :-D  But yes my athon is louder then my dual PIII so I see what you mean there... However the opteron can run with just heatsinks.  :-D

I wrote a few lines about this war-thing awhile back:
http://www.ann.lu/comments2.cgi?show=1055872657&category=forum&number=43#comment

In a way this situation is good and bad.

Good as it brings discussion in forums that might be much more quiet otherwise. There are people digging issues and facts of the rival company (some call it mudslinging, but atleast I have had lots of fun following what has been found about AI and Genesi. Better than The Bold and the beautiful :)

Bad, as it has brought bad blood and hatred amongts some members of the community. Some people do take this hobby a bit too seriously imho.
