About the New set of Specs from ACK and AInc.
« on: May 07, 2007, 09:25:39 PM »
I saw the announcement with the specs for the Power Design system from AInc and ACK.  It sounds impressive and the like.

One thing has me bothered though:  The price tag of $1500.

The only reason I am pointing this out is that last year for the video production business I have, we put together the following:

2 AMD Opteron Sledgehammer 246 processors, 2.0Ghz each
Tyan motherboard for said processors
2 GB Kingston DDR2 RAM
AGP 8x Video Card (Model Escapes me)
80 GB HD and a 160 GB Hitachi HD
Enermax 550 watt power supply
Case, fans and various sundries

In the neighborhood of $1200.  That was for a system once we put it together and tossed the OS on it was ready to go.

So the question I have is the following:  What do we think of the system spec and the price for said spec?

Don't forget that it's been said that it will be a complete system and not just a motherboard..

As we all know, pre-built systems are always more expensive... But if it looks and performs as sweet as it sounds I'm getting one of those babies!

You are right there.  I priced out Macs as an alternative to the PC-based systems I am using.  I damn near cried and screamed like a baby.

I must have missed the sentence about them being a complete system sans monitor.

Prebuilt systems are not always more expensive.  I've priced out several systems where I could not beat out the price on something ready made.

it's still a long way to market for this.. looks interesting, nothing as exsiting as the origional amiga launch but O.k. for the hobbiest/tinker market.  Might be interesting once they get an OS.

@Starrunner
what would do with the new amiga in post production?  there is no OS let alone software, it will be years before you could do anything practical with this lump of hardware. Let's just face it the amiga no longer has an edge....

This is a system built by a small company in probably relatively low production numbers.

You can't compare its price to mass produced systems in the x86 world. Those companies get better prices on parts and can spread their costs over larger quantities.

Honestly I think the price is good value fir money; provided it ever gets released of course!

You have a point, but you are comparing apples and oranges.  One's mass-produced with thousands of new units every day, the other.. well, it's a niche.

If Lamborghini's were produced at the rate of Ford's, I bet they would be less expensive too.

But hey, I don't care.  I'm getting $500 version anyway. :)

mmm....How much for this system in the UK I wonder? If it comes in at £1000ish I'll buy one, but it doesn't always work out that way. This is an expensive country sometimes and I've seen hardware from the US cost the same numbers in £'s as $'s, £1500 would be just tooooo steep.
Anyway, all being well I've waited years for this, how can I resist now?

Ofcourse I'll pay $1500 for a computer that does not even have a real browser, cause I am just that kind of geek. :)

Sure, but it remains to be seen whether or not it will actually be a quality product like a Lamborghini or Ducati. Small volume doesn't necessarily mean the product is good enough to be automatically thrown in the league of the exotic.

Just ask the Mos devs to port to the hardware...

Ooo, AROS is going to have a 64-bit port. Okay, a x86-64 port soon. I wonder if that could be ported over.

Well if its got the Efika port coming with PowerPC support that'll probably be most relevant. Though finding all those 64bit portability issues and fixing them will certainly help (depending on how its done of course).

@all
If it comes out then for a relatively low-volume product I think it's in a ... reasonable price point.

That is if it comes out though. After so many years of false promises I'm firmly in wait and see camp.
