XRGB-2 scan doubler ?! RGB->VGA!
« on: May 07, 2007, 03:29:34 AM »

Have any of you guys tried this with the amiga? There is an XRGB-2, an XRGB-2 plus, and now a XRGB-3.

They convert 15khz RGB, s-video, or composite to VGA.  The XRGB-2 does a max resolution of 1024x768, but the XRGB-3 does 1024x768, *1280x1024*, and 1600x1400.

1280x1024!  That would look sharp on my LCD.

I use/used an XRGB-2+ with my A600, A1200 and A4000.  IIRC, Coze uses an XRGB-2 on his A600 (and tested on A3000).
Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(

What type of quality are you getting from the output?  Is it substantially better than s-video?  Do you get any flicker in hi-res lace?

I've been looking at the XRGB3 also. Seems to be a solid unit, and there are tons of great reviews out there. Output quality is supposed to be not perfect, but absolutely fantastic.

They seem to be scarce. Another thing I've read (specifically in regard to the XRGB3) is that it does a poor job of handling certain PAL sources (flickering).  That might "not" be cool for quite a few amiga games.

Yes, currently the A3000 is my main rig, so I'm not using the xrgb very often now. But it works great. Honestly, I can't compare it to s-video cause I never used the s-video. But it's very satisfactory, it stands quite close to what I get from A3000 onboard scandoubler (amber). I usually get them second hand from japan yahoo auctions. they cost about 150-200$ depending on the condition, etc. Contact me if you need one.
I believe in mt. Fuji

I'm using one with my A1200. It works pretty good, except that it doesn't handle interlacing too well; in fact it doesn't de-interlace at all. There's also some picture instability (checkerboarded areas have a sort of "shimmering" effect) in 640-pixel-wide modes, but almost all of that can be cleared up by playing with the settings.

I need to figure out how to build a sort of bypass switch so I can use Productivity-type modes, because it will not pass through VGA over the RGB port. Set the screen to anything other than 15 KHZ and it'll go blank.

As far as I can tell, both PAL and NTSC work perfectly on the XRGB-2+.

I have an XRGB-2, works great with Amiga but it doesn't sample the entire overscan area (I don't think any "VGA box" does.)

It will look very ugly if you don't run it on your TFT's native res, so the XRGB-3 is probably better in your case.

I'm not sure whether there's an English speaking firmware for the XRGB-3, however.

Another option: The CYP-345S SCART/RGB to VGA converter.

Product photos and screenshots in the Amiga.org photo album.

Ok I have few questions on this.  Who makes them? Are the Video Toaster compatible? Where can you buy them? :-)

Micomsoft makes them http://www.micomsoft.co.jp/

And for buying.. Ebay perhaps? Lik-Sang used to stock them, but they're long gone. Google turns up some online stores, but they're all sold out. :-(
