A501 Battery leakage :-(
« on: January 28, 2007, 07:53:35 PM »
 :-(

Says it all really, I just got back my old A500 and A500+ and checked the 512kb expansion (phew soldering irons fumes, yek, better move that :-)) and the battery has totally fuzzed up.

Plan A is to remove the current battery ASAP! Then order a replacement.

The one in the A500+ will no doubt need doing as well. Luckily the A1200 accelerator has the other kind.

So what should I go for? Should i just use the same VARTA style battery or is it possible to replace it with one that won't leak?

I really hope the board isn't ruined, wish me luck!

If it is gone to the dogs, i may be able to help, I`ve got an A501 512k sat on the table in front of me, tested and working with battery, no leakage.

Yours for a tenner, including recorded delivery, if you fancy it me old china.

Cheers Mucker :idea:

The "coin"-type lithium cells are less prone to leakage, but non-rechargeable, so you'd have to disable the recharge circuit. This is a nice page:

Do you really need a replacement? All it does is keep the time...
And you should do it now instead of waiting ;)

I found a a500 in trash that had a defect a501 thanks to the battery.. The corrosion had actually already started to spread to the a500 itself as well.

@Mucker
Cheers Mucker I'm not sure that i'll be replacing it anyway. The A501 that is. I have a working A1200 that is my games machine now. This particular A500 I keep for sentimental reasons. It was my first one back when I was a kid :-)

@Tomas
The only thing I was waiting for was the soldering iron to heat up :-D It's a puny 15watt job so it takes a minute.

Well that's the A501 done, now I'm gonna check up on the A500+

Whilst I was at it though I decided to take a look at the chips in the original A500 to see what versions they are.

A500 rev 6A:
HK-6A-A03
B52/ROCK LOBSTER

Rom:
315093-02 / 9034 D

Fat Agnus:
8372A
318069-02
3490 23

Got bored :-D

I couldn't capture it on the digital camera we've got, but there is already some corrosion :-( not too bad, seems quite focused around the battery (obviously) though there are some hints of aquamarine near the C912 variable resister (guess).

Epoxy, maybe?  For the battery, not the Amiga!

The battery is kind of important these days.  It can be a real hassle if the time is wrong.
Setting the time via internet can cause some programs to crash.  Why?  Because some programs depend on time only going in one direction.  If your Amiga is slightly fast, setting it with the correct time causes the clock to go backwards.
I have written one application that won't crash, but you'll get screwey results.

@Mucker
Dunno what'll stop it, guess there'll be something in that link that was posted.

Quite relieved, the other A500 is just a stock A500, no upgrade with leaky batteries. Must have got confused with another A500+ I used to have. Doh.

It has been so long since I've seen these two machines :-D

Oh and whilst my original A500 (with battery leakage) merely appears a vague off-white the other looks like it just lost a fight with a vat of custard :-D

I dunno, if I epoxy the entire A500 it *might* stop it yellowing anymore :idea:

@Amigakit
You've just sold a battery :-D

Shame you don't do the Cocolino without a mouse or you'd have sold one of those too!
